China and Nigeria signed an official construction contract early Thursday, Beijing time, to build a railway along the African country’s coast, China Railway Construction Corp. Ltd. (CRCC) said. The 11.97 billion U.S. dollar contract is China’s single largest overseas contract project, the CRCC said. The coastal 22-stop railway, which will stretch for 1,402 kilometers, will link Nigeria’s economic capital Lagos in the west with Calabar in the east. Trains will travel at a top speed of 120 km per hour, according to the CRCC. “It is a mutually beneficial project,” said CRCC chairman Meng Fengchao, adding that the coastal railway project will adopt Chinese technological standards and result in equipment exports worth 4 billion dollars, such as construction machinery, trains and steel products. “Meanwhile, the project will create up to 200,000 local jobs, directly or indirectly. Up to 30,000 fixed job posts may also be provided when the railway is operational,” Meng said. CRCC president Zhang Zongyan said that the company would undertake further studies on the targeted market in order to allow railway, a green and efficient transportation mode, to play a more significant role in Africa. http://www.punchng.com/news/china-nigeria-sign-multi-billion-dollar-rail-contract/ |

China Railway Construction Corp. Ltd. (CRCC) signed the official construction contract with the Nigerian government on Wednesday in Abuja, the Xinhua news agency said. The Nigerian railway will stretch for 1,402 kilometres (871 miles) along the coast, linking Lagos, the financial capital of Africa's largest economy and leading oil producer, and Calabar in the east, according to the report. The $11.97 billion deal marks China's largest single overseas contract project so far, it said, citing CRCC. The news came two weeks after Mexico cancelled a $3.75 billion bullet train deal only days after it was signed with a Chinese-led consortium headed by CRCC -- the sole bidder -- reportedly due to concerns about transparency. CRCC chairman Meng Fengchao said the Nigeria project will adopt Chinese technological standards and lead to $4 billion-worth of Chinese exports of construction machinery, trains, steel products and other equipment, Xinhua said. It will create up to 200,000 local jobs during the construction and a further 30,000 positions once the line is operational, he said. "It is a mutually beneficial project," Meng was quoted by Xinhua as saying. Trains will travel at a maximum speed of 120 kilometres per hour on the link, the report added. China has dramatically stepped up its presence on the African continent in recent decades as it seeks more resources and new markets for its economy. Trade between China and Nigeria totalled $13.6 billion last year. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang promised more investment and more Chinese technical expertise during a visit earlier this year. http://www.timeslive.co.za/africa/2014/11/20/china-railway-construction-corp-signs-12bn-deal-to-build-nigerian-railway |

Omooba77:China is doing all these to provide market for all their excess steel. This is not a GEJ's admin initiated project, it was Govs Amaeachi, Sylvia, Ibori, Donald Duke who proposed this based on advice during Obasanjo regime. The best option is direct Labour that would target youths of the region during the construction and operating phases. |

All well and good. Now If only Ajakouta was working... The Chinese are also benefitting hugely here, they loan you money, use their own labour, purchase machinery from their own economy, thus effectively pumping the bulk of the money loaned to us back to their own country. We cannot continue on this sort of patch patch industrialisation where all of our major builds are done by outsiders and the massive population not enjoying from the government's construction boom. |

Timehin:This train/rail that the Chinese are building for Nigeria, will it be a bullet train system? At least, it should be better than the Gatwick Express.I sincerely hope we get a modern train system soon....the refurbished locomotive types are really uncomfortable and slow! In fact, they constitute a real health hazard. ![]() |
