Lionel Messi has broken La Liga's long-standing goalscoring record with his hat-trick against Sevilla on Saturday. The Argentine struck with a fantastic free-kick in the 22ndminute,and continued his impressive form during the match as he also netted in the 72nd and 78minute of the game at Camp Nou to reach 253 goals in the Primera Division, thus surpassing the mark set by former Athletic Bilbao hero Telmo Zarra in 1955. The Basque forward's 251 goals came in 277 games, while Messi's have arrived in 289. Zarra, who also netted 20 in 20 appearances for Spain, was 35 by the time he made it to 251. Messi, at 27 and with many years still ahead of him, could yet go on and score well over 300 goals in La Liga. The Argentine is already Barca's all-time top goalscorer and now has 366 strikes in all competitions for the Catalan club. |
