Hello
New on Nairaland

I would like to know people's views on the issue of serious discrimination against anyone over-45 (of which I am one!) seeking employment in Nigeria. I have applied for numerous jobs, be it long-term, short-term, consultancy and so on. Despite my wealth of experience, skills and expertise, I have not had even an interview! Are employers intimidated by experienced/older professionals? Surely our experience will bring added value to organisations and we can be of help to younger employees. Please we should not be discarded with yet! We are still useful to the employment market!! Anyone feeling similarly frustrated with this type of discrimination and unfairness?? Let's hear your veiws!

I swear this discrimination is what encourages football age in the labour market. Like the 35 year old dude in my office claiming to be 27.

My uncle is having same problem, he said maybe age discrimination is because the company think young people have more zeal than the older ones.

In my late 20s. At that age, I should be an employer of labour!

You shouldn't be seeking for job! What if u don't get? How long would u continue? I suggest u start up something on ur own, since u clearly stated that u hve experience, u should also be an employer to young pple, not seeking for job which u may never find. This is nigeria, truth be told though

Its saddening when it comes to employment issue in Nigeria. With ur wealth of experience as u said in ur post will drive organisational goals. But I think organisations out there wants 'young shall grow' employees. But my candid advise sir, if dey refused to employ u, 'employ yourself sir'

At over-45, you should already have your retirement plan if you work in the civil service.
At that age you should be your own boss and not someone bossing you around except you are uneducated. At that age, your working class days are almost over

Most companies in Nigeria now recruits between 20 and 25yrs as young graduate because of long service, while they will recruit between 30-35yrs due to experience.
Many companies in Nigeria will never recruit your age range because "Nigeria has low life expectancy rate". which implies that they may have to pay people death benefit even when the decease have not work for long.

my opinion.

Its really a sad situation.
On the other hand, if people who are 45 yrs and above are still struggling to get into the labour market, wat's d hope for fresh graduates like us?
