2015: Jega says elections in N’East depend on security DECEMBER 4, 2014 BY FRIDAY OLOKOR 15 Comments INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega | credits: The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday in Abuja stated that the conduct of the 2015 general elections in the North-East would depend on advice from security agencies. According to the commission, only assurances from security agencies on the safety of its personnel, materials as well as free atmosphere will determine whether election will hold in the crisis-prone states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in 2015. The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, stated this in an interview with journalists during the opening ceremony of a two-day strategic stakeholder’s policy dialogue on promoting peaceful elections in 2015 in Abuja on Wednesday. The United Nations also used the occasion to warn politicians against the ‘do or die’ politics and likely factors that could propel crisis in the coming elections. Jega, however, expressed the hope that before February 2015, the various security challenges facing the country would have been addressed to give way for the conduct of free and safe polls. The event was organised by the United Nations Development Programme, Democratic Governance for Development Programme and supported by the Institute of Peace Conflict and Resolution and the Transition Monitoring Group. Jega said the commission was putting arrangement in place towards ensuring that the Internally Displaced Persons were registered and participated fully in the forthcoming polls. He said, “As an election management body, INEC is prepared to conduct elections everywhere in this country. As for the security challenges, INEC is not a security agency; we rely on the advice, cooperation and support of security agencies to be able to secure our materials, to secure our personnel and to enable us to have a free atmosphere within which to conduct elections. “We are hopeful that before February 2015, a lot of security challenges will be addressed so that there would be sufficient normalcy to conduct elections at that time. So, at this point, I can tell you that we are doing our best to ensure that elections are conducted everywhere in this country in February of 2015.” The INEC chairman, however, expressed concern over the Boko Haram incessant terror attacks in the North-East. He said, “We have to remain hopeful; we all know that our security agencies are doing their best. You can’t give up hope, you can’t just assume that things will still be getting from bad to worse; you have to assume and hope that things will get better and our hope is that things will get better before February, 2015.” |

It definitely won't, unless the insurgency is crushed before then or the electorates are allowed to vote in other states. |

ofcourse who would be the officials to conduct the elections in those areas? But does this mean automatic re - election for those in power? |

That was the plan all along. It just doesn't make sense to accuse APC of these bombings because they know they would lose if elections dont take place in these areas. |

That's our presidents plan. But by the special grace of God it won't work 4him. It shows how less confident GEJ is. Killing ppl cos of his own selfish interest. The eastern part vote combined cn nt match dt of the North. Dts y he has refused to to curb d insurgency. Nigerians, let's be logical abt the appenings in this country under the rule of GEJ,leave tribalism n 4gt abt relgion beliefs. how can sum1 want 2hold a country into ransom cos of selfish interest. This is so unfair, people r dieing n our president is doin nothing or beta still has achieved notin.rather he's so concerned abt 2nd term. By 2015 he's goin 2b a former president. |

1wolex85: I always laugh whenever I see People accusing APC of sponsoring Boko Haram. Why would APC sponsor Boko Haram when they know if the insurgency continues it's going to affect election in their stronghold?! It doesn't make sense to accuse APC of sponsoring Boko Haram. There's something the FG is hiding from the Public. Some weeks ago, they said Election would hold in only 12 of the 27 LGAs in Borno State. Today, they're saying it may not hold in the entire NE at all. Their [PDP] prayers have always been that Election should not hold in those areas. Or Insurgency should continue so as to disenfranchise Electorates from that State! 1 Like |

adisaoladayo: Some of you type carelessly without even thinking about what you are typing. If you are invited by the SSS to shed more light on the bolded statement, you will start shouting human right. @Topic, The National Assembly should quickly grant the executive arm of government the required approval to extend the SOE. We are in a state of war. Politics should take the back seat, maybe to continue afterwards. All hands must be on deck to ensure that elections hold in every part of this country in 41 days time. 1 Like |

I've said it, Jonathan will pay for his actions and inactions on Boko Haram. It may be in the ICC. He has deliberately watched the Boko Haram activities escalate. What kind of a C-in-C that will watch his soldiers being killed, because of his ambition? 1 Like |

For your information, boko haram has 2 set of groups. Pro PDP BH, their targets are to bomb mosque and other muslim community to reduce the population of people that will vote for GMB Pro APC BH, their targets are christian community e.g Chibok in other to reduce the number of people that might vote for GEJ THEY ( APC and PDP) both knows what that they are doing. My major consign now is, what do the masses gained from these vampires ( GMB and GEJ ) that they want to die on someone cause? Note: No matter how politics fanatic you may be, that doesn't mean we should support the killing of innocent people.. Enough is enough.. How I wish our institution are more powerful that individual.. In our case, it is the reverse case.. God bless Nigeria |

I've always said it that the endgame of the promoters of Boko Haram is to ensure as many opposition sympathetic votes as possible are disenfranchised. They use war in the North, and PVC denial in the South. All within opposition strongholds!! These guys are just fooling themselves. |
