I woke this morning with red - eyes. Thanks to the taxi driver who gave me a call at exactly 4:03 am. Otherwise, it would have been another story. I arrived the consulate at 5:30 am. The crowd was not as I expected. I became uptight and nervous, in the quest to calm my nervousness, I was asking babes and blokes if they are on Nairaland but their responses were negative, I couldn't believe I had no brother from the thread . Furthermore, I had to run a brief interview with those blokes, in another sad moment, their responses were against what my coaches here have been stating, before a bad company corrupts a good habit, I had to refrain from all form of communication. On the other hand, I kept my mouth opened so that it won't stink when I'll be chatting with the VO. grin
After all the checks and drama, the adjudication process began with 1st 3 folks facing rejection. I was still keeping my cool, still ruminating on the words of the elders on NL (confidence is key).
Here comes my turn at Window 7 with a white lady in her late 20s or very early 30s. She's rejected 5 persons and approved 2 before me.
I was trying to use my Mathematics mind to compute the sequence and possibly derive a formula for approval or denial but my sequence was not convergent.
I walked close to the counter where my number was displayed, this is what transpired;
Me: hey !how is it going?
VO: very well
VO: You are going to Illinois state University?
Me: Exactly
VO : When did u graduate
Me:2012
VO: where did u school?
Me: University of Lagos
VO: what Degree?
Me: Bachelor of science in Education
VO : How did u choose this school?
Me: I did a comprehensive research online by cataloging using Princetonreview.Com, usnews.com and stateuniversity.com.
VO: Did you apply to other schools
Me: yes I did
Vo:: hmm mm, ok
Me: North Carolina A $ T state university, Arizona state University and SIUE
VO: What will this degree do for you?
ME: When I return to NIGERIA, I'll take over my uncle's Science college
VO : Science college? (With a chuckle)
Me: (smiling sheepishly )
VO: Did u take GRE
ME: yes I did
Vo: can I have your test report?
Me: sure (gave it to her with a a smile)
V O: who is your sponsor?
Me: My mum is my main sponsor but my uncle will be supporting (still staring at her while she nodded)
VO: she gave me a white paper
me : was still staring with ambivalent feelings
VO: pick up your visa on Friday in VI
Me: Thank you!
Recommendations;
1. Pray enough because men who kneel before God can can stand before men.
2. Make ur response simple until u are asked to expatiate by the VO
3. Maintain eye contact until u hear the golden remark.
4. Don't be scared when u see other persons being denied, that could trigger some funny hormones in ur system.
Appreciation:
God uses people to bless us, I will be such an ingrate if I do not mention few names who were part of this race. Thanks to slimmy05, my brother,my chief editor,special adviser on standardized test issues, I can't forget Bigfrancis for taking time out to help even when it is not comfortable, Oga Walspring -general commentator, Prof ImPeriouxx ,adviser on public matters grin. My boat rocks today becos of everyone on this thread. I've learnt from people's approval and rejection, the comments, hilarious comments and all the saga.
*trust me, I was literally flying while walking out of the consulate, I trekked from the consulate to Obalende without the knowledge of it*
