I woke this morning with red - eyes. Thanks to the taxi driver who gave me a call at exactly 4:03 am. Otherwise, it would have been another story. I arrived the consulate at 5:30 am. The crowd was not as I expected. I became uptight and nervous, in the quest to calm my nervousness, I was asking babes and blokes if they are on Nairaland but their responses were negative, I couldn't believe I had no brother from the thread . Furthermore, I had to run a brief interview with those blokes, in another sad moment, their responses were against what my coaches here have been stating, before a bad company corrupts a good habit, I had to refrain from all form of communication. On the other hand, I kept my mouth opened so that it won't stink when I'll be chatting with the VO. grin
After all the checks and drama, the adjudication process began with 1st 3 folks facing rejection. I was still keeping my cool, still ruminating on the words of the elders on NL (confidence is key).
Here comes my turn at Window 7 with a white lady in her late 20s or very early 30s. She's rejected 5 persons and approved 2 before me.
I was trying to use my Mathematics mind to compute the sequence and possibly derive a formula for approval or denial but my sequence was not convergent.
I walked close to the counter where my number was displayed, this is what transpired;
Me: hey !how is it going?
VO: very well
VO: You are going to Illinois state University?
Me: Exactly
VO : When did u graduate
Me:2012
VO: where did u school?
Me: University of Lagos
VO: what Degree?
Me: Bachelor of science in Education
VO : How did u choose this school?
Me: I did a comprehensive research online by cataloging using Princetonreview.Com, usnews.com and stateuniversity.com.
VO: Did you apply to other schools
Me: yes I did
Vo:: hmm mm, ok
Me: North Carolina A $ T state university, Arizona state University and SIUE
VO: What will this degree do for you?
ME: When I return to NIGERIA, I'll take over my uncle's Science college
VO : Science college? (With a chuckle)
Me: (smiling sheepishly )
VO: Did u take GRE
ME: yes I did
Vo: can I have your test report?
Me: sure (gave it to her with a a smile)
V O: who is your sponsor?
Me: My mum is my main sponsor but my uncle will be supporting (still staring at her while she nodded)
VO: she gave me a white paper
me : was still staring with ambivalent feelings
VO: pick up your visa on Friday in VI
Me: Thank you!
Recommendations;
1. Pray enough because men who kneel before God can can stand before men.
2. Make ur response simple until u are asked to expatiate by the VO
3. Maintain eye contact until u hear the golden remark.
4. Don't be scared when u see other persons being denied, that could trigger some funny hormones in ur system.

Here is my transcript. VO was a young lady on window 7.

VO: You're going for a master's degree in Public Health at the university of Illinois Yeah
Me: Exactly

VO: Why this school
Me: Because currently there's an ongoing research work by Professor Sharon LaFollette on the cellular interaction between Ebola virus glycoprotein and the receptor site on the host cell. I contacted her and I told her about my research interest which is quite similar with hers then she encouraged me to apply so I can joinher in the ongoing rresearch work which is really gonna be beneficial to me and apart from that, (VO cuts in. Was pissed cos I wasn't done with my epistle)

VO: Can I see ur undergraduate transcript
Me: My school does not issue students transcript but I have my certificate and statement of results here.

VO: which school
Me: University of lagos

VO: What course
me: Microbiology

VO: What have u been doing since u left school
Me: worked at bla bla bla and currently working at bla bla has a field manager.

VO: so you don't have any experience in the health sector
Me: part of my job description is to organise health seminars and programmes and during my undergraduate days I did a course in medical virology and this (VO cuts in)

VO: How many schools did u apply to
me: 5

VO: Can u please name them
Me: Yeah sure. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Oklahoma State University, University of Toronto, Florida institute of technology

VO: How many admitted you
me: 3 the remaining 2 are yet to make an admission decision

VO: so why this school
Mesad joy came into my heart now atleast I can finish my long epistle). So I started again then she cuts in (I frowned at her and I think she saw it, she smiled.

VO: who's sponsoring you
Me. My mum

VO: What does she do
Me: she's into oil and gas business. She's a major distributor of cooking gas and diesel oil

VO: Please pick ur visa at (didn't hear the rest)

I really Thank God for my interview cos not a single document was checked. Wanna say a big thank u to my Day one friends @stewee and @iam_chux I really appreciate ur effort. Also thank u bigfrancis, slimmy05, imperiouxx and all the great people on this thread. A BIG THANK U TO BABA GOD..

Congratulations to all those that had their visas approved. Was issued a 214b denial today @ the Abuja consulate.
VO: Good morning. Even before I got to the counter
Me: Good morning
Vo: Pass your documents. Which I did
Vo: You're going to UNT for an MPH
Me: Yes
Vo: Y UNT
Me: Accredited by council on education for pub health, well structured curriculum includes all sub specialties in pub health and the opportunity of doing research work on Ebola infection in the hospital
Vo: Who's paying?
Me: my elder sister
Vo: Y
Me: She's been in charge of my education since I was little and paid part of my tuition in medical school
Vo: So you're a medical doctor
Me: Yes
Vo: Where do you work?
Me: in a private hospital
Vo: As what?
Me: Medical officer
Vo: What's ur specialty?
Me: Gp
Vo: What kind of work do you do in the hospital
Me: In patient n outpatient management of illnesses
Vo: What does your sister do?
Me: She's a paediatrician
Vo: Pass me her bank statement. After scrutinizing, asked for reference letter. Which I presented. Scrutinized again n continued typing
Vo: Have u travelled out of the country
Me: No. I've not had any reason to travel uptill now
Vo: Typed for a while before issuing the 214b.

The guy didn't even ask of any family ties. He denied all the young people before me though most were tourism visa. School resumes 12th December. I'm considering reapplying n requesting for expedite appointment. Cos I feel this denial is unjust. What's your take on this. Your candid opinion would be invaluable.

Sorry about the denial. I believe you didn't state your case thoroughly. I think your reason for choosing the school wasnt convincing enough. You fumbled when she asked where you work; Private hospitals have names. She started to probe you and you fell into her trap.

In her mind, you are a medical doctor that earns a salary per month yet you are not co-sponsoring your education, you have no grant, no assistantship or anything. from your age, she will know your sister might have a family of her own and you might be a burden on her as well. To send someone to med school is expensive in nigeria and more expensive in the USA.

To me It's not cogent enough. They denied you because of any or both reasons aforementioned. You need to sell yourself to them.

From my experience, that's what I think. I might be wrong sha

I walked close to the counter where my number was displayed, this is what transpired;
Me: hey !how is it going?
VO: very well
VO: You are going to Illinois state University?
Me: Exactly
VO : When did u graduate
Me:2012
VO: where did u school?
Me: University of Lagos
VO: what Degree?
Me: Bachelor of science in Education
VO : How did u choose this school?
Me: I did a comprehensive research online by cataloging using Princetonreview.Com, usnews.com and stateuniversity.com.
VO: Did you apply to other schools
Me: yes I did
Vo:: hmm mm, ok
Recommendations;
Appreciation:
