NLC Threatens Nationwide Strike To Sympathise With Health Workers by worlexy(m): 9:08am On Dec 11, 2014
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Wednesday
threatened to call a nationwide strike in sympathy with the
health workers.
This is just as it warned the Federal Government not to drag
the issue and force other Nigerian workers to join in the
strike.
In a statement signed by its general secretary, Peter Ozo-
Eson, the congress said it would not be advisable for
government to make inevitable a general sympathy strike.
It, therefore, called on the Federal Government to as a matter
of urgency, bring to an end the strike by the Joint Health
Sector Unions and Assembly of Health Care Professionals
(JOHESU), by addressing the issues raised by the health
sector unions.
The congress expressed worries at the government’s
indifference and insensitivity to the strike, which had entered
its second week.
It described the present situation in the health sector as a sad
commentary on the nation’s democratic culture, which ought
to be refined.
The NLC added that the health sector was too sensitive and
the situation therein too fragile for government to maintain
this level of obduracy.
The statement read: “We urge the Federal Government to,
with every sense of obligation to JOHESU on the one hand
and responsibility to the people of Nigeria on the other,
speedily bring to an end this strike, by way of addressing the
substantive issues raised by the health sector unions.
“The health sector unions exhibited every degree of
understanding, patience and patriotism, as well as exhausted
time-tested social dialogue mechanism of collective
bargaining in an effort to avoid the strike.
“We consider this indifference callous, injurious and an
affront to hordes of Nigerians in need of medicare on a daily
basis and a demonstration of government’s disdain for
legally-binding agreements and court judgments.
“We think it inadvisable for government to make inevitable a
general sympathy strike.
“Although, the congress said the issues of health should
never be politicised, it, however, expressed concern that at the
threshold of general election, government could afford to
conduct itself in this manner on issues which it is obliged to
act upon.”
The NLC pointed out that government’s honour was at stake
and the least expected of it was to redeem it by acceding to
the demands of JOHESU.
