The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) says it will commence an indefinite strike by 12 midnight today (Feb. 17) if the Federal Government failed to meet members’ demands. The National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union who also doubled as JOHESU National Chairman, Mr Biobebelemoye Josiah, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.
Josiah explained that members are demanding for improved working conditions, including the implementation of skipping of Grade Level 10. According to him, JOHESU is asking for adjustment of the 2009 CONHESS salary table and allowances as was done for the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in January 2014. He described government insensitivity to the demands as ``provocative, insulting and unjust in the worst dimension in a democratic dispensation’’.
Josiah lamented that members of the union were being subjected to discrimination and industrial marginalisation in the health sector in favour of NMA members.
On the issue of skipping of Grade level 10, he noted that rather than paying them the money government went ahead to pay medical doctors which he claimed were not entitle to such allowance by law.
Josiah also explained that the court ruled in their favour that they should be paid, adding that government failed to respect the court injunction. However, Josiah called on the federal government to give priority attention and capture the financial implication of the demands in this year’s health sector budget. According to him, JOHESU comprised more than 99 per cent of service deliverance in the health system, noting that government failure to meet the demands would have negative impact on the country’s healthcare delivery.
``JOHESU members and doctors are treated differently, even when it is not the right of doctors to earn specific pay they accord them the pay which is part of the problems we are passing through. ``This now brings disharmony because there is no fair administration of the health system which is part of the things that is causing disharmony and turbulence in the system, to avoid that the President should change such act,’’ he said. JOHESU is an umbrella body of all professional and non-professional health workers, excluding medical doctors.

This thread needs to be moved to front page.
There is a big magine between medical doctors and other health workers.

I'll advise our government to look into this matter because not everyone have the interest of becoming a medical doctor.

Take for instance an house officer take home is more than level 11officer and prefencial treatments is just too much.

JOHESU leaders as well fight for their selfish interest. I could vividly remember 2014/2015 strike was a waste of time. JOHESU went for three months strike only to call it off when their personal pocket enrich.

The question is... Hope this strike will not waste of life(s)?

Here we go again. Another "JOHESU vs Medical Doctors" series of threads brewing. If its your right, use the law to defend your argument. Don't bring a lame excuse that because drs are paid this, u must be paid that. Plus, learn to stop painting drs in a bad image and misleading the public just to gain public sympathy for your cause.

These people going on strike are not medical doctors. Nurses who went to the university too are not part of them.

No sir, you are misinformed. A house officer (doctor) is on an equivalent of CONHESS 9 while med lab scientists and pharmacy interns are on CONHESS 8 Salary scale. And that is very fair if you ask me..

It's really funny that other health workers like lab scientists, pharmacists, porters, hospital cleaners, security etc come together and decide to go on strike because they are not receiving the same salaries and allowances as doctors.
Nigerians need to start behaving civil and Noble really. We can't be misbehaving in the name of unionism asking for equal salary with people who we had completely different training with...Even Albert Einstein said the worst form of inequality is trying to make unequal things equal.

Johesu again?

Honestly I'm tired of these people. Everywhere in the world, doctors get better pay than other health pros. Is there a worldwide strike to that effect? What is the essence of hierarchy if we level out the cadre?

These people are just too antagonistic. I just tire.

For those who may not Understand, let me explain what JOHESU means to you.

The nurses(who spent three years in Nursing school. A few of them got part-time Bsc. )
The ward orderlies(in other words, messangers, secondary school leaving certificate holders)
Admin staff(who literally spend half of the day gossiping at their desks)
Technicians(who fix the bulbs and other hospital property)

but also,
lab scientists, and the most pathetic of all, pharmacists.

Their agitation is that the Doctors get better paid than them. But, listen again, and think about it. Can all the afore mentioned people be paid the same amount of money?

Interestingly, pharmacists get paid almost as much as the Doctors. But the truth is that Doctors work all day long and as well do calls. whereas they shift their own services and what do Pharmacists do in hospitals? They DISPENSE drugs. Their mates in other countries manufacture drugs for the populace..but they ONLY dispense the drugs a Doctor must have prescribed for a patient. Most of these lab scientists and pharmacists chose medicine as their first choice courses but were given these courses of study. of course, logically there is a difference.

the level of expertise, the amount of mental input and the amount of workload have great effects. How can any of these, educated people not understand and think every managerial problem they have has to be against the Doctors.

Pharmacists forming a union with these other people irks me. they have thrown their profession to the dogs. and no, it is completely absurd for a ward orderly to want the same salary level as a Doctor and for pharmacists and lab workers to join in such ridiculous agitations.

These people are only trying to sabotage tthe Federal Government and should be dealt with accordingly.

Yeah. And how we love to bash doctors who monetize life a play acting God. Greedy lot.
Just watch this space. By December they will be demanding special exchange rates of 1 naira to a dollar from the CBN and before the decade is out, first line charge from the treasury. Afterall they are more important than the judiciary and legislature combined.

as in eee.....instead of fighting for their course they're busy hating and chastising doctors as if doctors are responsible for the whorls......even in US CANADA AND UK doctors get more better pay than other health workers and thats because of the hierarchy of civil service.

is time people started fighting for their rights without bringing others down
