If you ever wanted to make the ‘perfect’ doughnut, then this
mathematical formula is what you have been waiting for.
The secret to the “perfect” doughnut has been mathematically
proven – and apparently it’s all to do with the size of the
hole.
Dr Eugenia Cheng, Senior Lecturer of Pure Mathematics at the
University of Sheffield, used calculus to find what gives the
confectionery that can’t-resist appeal, reports Telegraph
Dubbed the ‘Squidgy to Crispy ratio’, her method proves that
the smaller the hole in the middle of the doughnut, the
squidgier it is, while a bigger hole will make the doughnut
crispier.
Dr Cheng, who has previously worked on defining “the perfect
cream tea ”, was called upon to find a formula for the perfect
doughnut by Domino’s Pizza UK, who launched a new line in
freshly baked doughnuts last month.
“The hole is integral to the ‘whole’ doughnut experience, so it
makes complete sense that it affects the texture and taste,”
said Simon Wallis, sales and marketing director at Domino’s.
With an average hole size of 11mm, Domino’s doughnuts have
a squidgy to crispy ratio of 3.5 : 1 which, in layman’s terms,
means they are approximately four fifths squidge and one fifth
crisp: which Dominos claims to be the winning formula of
doughnut quality.
“[The] relatively small hole means that the Domino’s
doughnuts are 78 per cent squidge and 22 per cent crisp –
definitely squidgier than the average ring doughnut,” said Dr
Cheng.
“If you’re me, then it’s easy to get carried away messing
around with calculus. Go ahead and eat your doughnuts
however you like them.”
After vigorous research conducted by a unit of testers here at
the Telegraph labs, we have concluded that Domino’s
doughnuts are indeed quite squidgy.

JOBLESS PROF
She was contracted to do a job by Dominos which she did very well and most likely got paid. Now, what is jobless about that?
