YOUTHS from Nkanu East/West Federal Constituency have threatened a showdown following what they described as attempt to alter outcome of the result from the primary election held penultimate Friday which produced Dr. Emeka Ujam as winner. Ujam, who is the immediate past Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, was returned as winner of the primary by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) returning officer for the Nkanu East/West Federal Constituency primary election, Mr. Christian Iyang, after polling 83 out of the 103 accredited votes to defeat the incumbent, Hon. Peace Nnaji, who got 20 votes. Tension, however, started brewing in the two local government councils making up the federal constituency when some delegates to the just concluded national convention in Abuja came back with reported interest by the wife of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan that the Vice Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Industries, Mrs. Nnaji, should be fielded for the election. A youth leader in the community, Eugene Nnamoko, told The Guardian that it was the plot to upturn the outcome of the transparent primary to favour the incumbent that necessitated the meeting of various groups and town unions in the area saying that the youths resolved to resist the move. Nnamoko wondered how Abuja should want to impose a candidate on the constituency pointing out that for the eight years Nnaji was at the House of Representatives her impact could not be felt. He said that if PDP or the wife of President Jonathan wanted the woman to be returned unopposed, there was no need allowing other contestants to purchase nomination forms and campaign for the election, adding that the attempt to substitute the name of Dr. Ujam would precipitate big crisis in the area. When contacted on phone, Ujam said that he was only hearing the plot to circumvent his victory as a rumour, stressing that until the certificate of return issued him is withdrawn, he would not lose sleep over the concerted effort by his rival to edge him out. The former commissioner said that as a loyal party man, he has asked his supporters to avoid anything that could lead to a breach of public peace, adding that the video clip of the primary election is enough evidence that Hon. Nnaji who was present at the election did not object the outcome. http://ngrguardiannews.com/news/national-news/190188-pdp-primary-youths-threaten-showdown-over-attempt-to-replace-ujam |
