That's naive.

I also thought same when I was say...13-15 yrs of age.

Its actually a very good idea. You prefer the transportation of refined petroleum products via tankers, putting pressure on our roads and infrastructures; or via pipelines that are easily traced and burst these days? At least, a pipeline know to be carrying crude is not as attractive as a pipeline carrying petrol.

And I've not even started on the economics as regards job creation- reducing the propensity for ppl to indulge in violence; sundry industries tied to the refinery springing up; the fact that we would be producing the products at lower costs thereby equalising the prices of the petrol and other distillates throughout the country.

Sometimes we get too bugged down in sentiments to see things clearly. But its ok, you keep on expanding your mind.

Don't stop learning.
All I can say is that you were smarter when you were younger. What could be responsible for this?

Regarding the highlighted, have you ever heard of the term "stolen crude"? Regarding your second psuedo-economics point, if the jobs are created near the source of the crude, they won't really be jobs? Would they?

And here you are talking about sentiments. Out of it's 30 odd years of existence, how many years of full operation has it actually achieved?

The lies being peddled by a section of the media, some of whose agents are here on Nairaland, is staggering. This is the umpteenth time one would deal with this issue. I think it's about time to let it rest. Some people are hard-wired to denounce the truth whenever they see it or hear about it, they thrive in lies, filth, and of course darkness!!

I wouldn't bother joining issues with anyone who imagines that Buhari deserves no credit for the establishment of some of the refineries we have in this country. I know what I know and no amount of uncanny alterations and propaganda can dent the squeeky clean reputation of the People's General.

God bless APC.
I learnt not to argue with them unnecessarily, I only dropped verified fact and let them do their whinning. Beside, see this thread https://www.nairaland.com/2047778/buhari-jailed-all#28939265

Even in the US which is a net importer of crude, majority of the refineries are located either within the source or in proximity to coastal ports.

Building a refinery in Kaduna was and still a waste. What would have sufficed would have been building depots serviced by networks of pipes conveying refined fuel.

Stop mixing things up by being smarter by half. Are you comparing having a refinery at Kaduna and one in Port Harcourt to having 2 refineries in Portharcourt and having to transport the products via tankers?

A little of the consequence is what we have in Lagos now where tankers from kano to jigawa come to line up on apapa road waiting for their turn to load, causing bad roads and serious traffic in the process.

I don't have the time for long discussion now but will be back later, need to finish up a design here.

But I won't be surprised if you've never been in a position to manage human and material resources.

I am sure there is an intelligent point hidden under all this verbiage but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Buhari was minster during the greatest expansion of our refining capacity and pipeline infrastructure.
However this is neither here nor there, all the credit goes to the young military governments of Gowon, Muhammad and Obasanjo. One thing we should thank Buhari for was the lack of corruption scandal with those projects, even then 10% was common. Now with GEJ government, it is 100% kickback by building the project and selling it cheaply to yourself and cronies whilst giving tax waivers for the first five years...lol.
The military rulers worked the National Development Plans well and they had very good civil servants to work with.
Everything got bad with IBB and became hell with Abacha. Abacha's son is now working with Jonathan.

As appointed minister of petroleum who do you expect to sign it?

Why glorify this?

Since we are on what he achieved as minister what about his legacy of stealing €2.8 billion pounds from NNPC account?
the initial news u heard about the refineries was when he was a serving minister, tell me what duties do u expect of him before

Signing a contract to build a refinery in Kaduna (hundreds of miles) from any crude oil source is a stupid thing to commend anyone for. That was one daft, politically determined, wasteful project. There is nothing to boast about here.
Hatred and bigotry will never make you have sense, is it safer and cheaper to transport crude oil by pipeline to Kaduna and distribute or transport petrol, kerosene, diesel etc by tankers from Warri or Port Harcourt to the Norther states. You are talking of distance, the countries we sell millions of barrel to daily are they farther or nearer us than Kaduna? Bigotry can never make you have sense.
Re: Who Signed The Contract For Kaduna And Warri Refineries? by Nobody: 7:50pm On Dec 16, 2014
It appears from the arguments here that people do not know that the Kaduna refinery was not designed to process the grade of crude produced in Nigeria. It was meant to process a heavier grade of crude like the one produced in Venezuela. Meaning the feedstock to the Kaduna refinery had to be imported, likely through Lagos and then transported all the way to Kaduna.

How do you know that that the choice of Kaduna isn't determined by hatred and bigotry? Is the market that Kaduna serves bigger than the Lagos market. Why wasnt the refinery built in Lagos?

I expected a lot more from you than the ad hominem insults, however I understand the season can have a less than salutary effect on good manners.

If it was built in Lagos, you will say why not Benin or Ore instead of Lagos. Whether Kaduna or Sokoto or Bayelsa. Tribalists are never pleased

And the picture said they were declaring the refinery open.. commissioning a refinery is not the same as building a refinery!!. Warri refinery was started in 1974 and finished in 1978.. I wonder why you won't give up already on this. Start another propaganda.

The only thing that should be credited to Buhari is the stolen $2.8 billion under his watch.

From your reference, some sections of petrochemical plants were conceived.

I don't know when a section of a complex or addition of process is regarded as building a Refinery.
Valid Proof for this Please

hypothetical if.. But it wasn't. It was built in Kaduna hundreds of miles from the coast to process imported heavy crude. My non-tribalist tell me how that makes any economic sense. That refinery is a political project.

Now, some are lapping up the fable that if Buhari comes in as President, corruption and embezzlement in high places would come to an end. But I think this is like the story of the child and Santa Clause. That reality does not exist now or in the future, because the reality of who Buhari is has been shown to us through his real actions, not by the pictures and images being put out there by his spin-doctors and uncritical supporters. Should I start with the scandal of the N2.8 billion NNPC money that got stolen under his watch as Petroleum Minister and head of NNPC in 1978? Let’s bear in mind that the value of that money in hard currency at the time was more than $3 billion. Under intense public pressure, the Shehu Shagari government, which shortly took over thereafter from the military, set up a Senate probe which traced the money to a London Midland Bank account belonging to Buhari from where the money again got missing. No less than a person of the then Senate Majority Leader and Chairman of the Senate probe panel, Dr Olusola Saraki revealed this in an interview with Vera Ifudu of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). When Ifudu reported this, she was clandestinely sacked by the NTA, but the lady went to court and presented all the evidence and won in a case of wrongful dismissal. Saraki till his death never denied what he told the lady. In the end, they settled Ifudu with a big payout to buy her silence.
