*walks to the blackboard. Hi class! We're here to learn how to write good poems. But first, we need to know what makes a poem good and before that we need to know what a poem is. Are we ready? |

poetry - /ˈpəʊɪtri/ noun 1. literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature. This is the dictionary meaning of poetry. A poem is a written work that has the description in the definition. |

Like other literary works ,poetry is made up of words. But what is special about poetry? How is reading poetry different from reading prose? A good start to answering the question is to consider what poetry is concerned with: poems. A poem is a self-contained text, which makes sense as it stands. It differs from prose most obviously because it is written in lines whose length is decided by the author, not the printer. How the poem looks on the page, its visual lay- out, is as important as its sound quality. A poem makes intense use of language, which results in a fare greater concentration of meaning than is commonly found in prose. Prose works only with the brain. Poetry works with the eyes. The ears. The mind. There are style of peoms written in special ways to suit the eyes. Eg. The diamond poem, which comes in the shape of a rhombus. The rhombus is the shape that represents the diamond best. Also, there are poetry devices which are used mainly to suit the ears like the alliteration and the assonance. Prose is prose. But poetry is of types. Just like how a programmer has a series of languages to choose from to write his codes, a poet also has a series of styles to choose from to write his poem with The first style that will be treated in this project is the free verse. Writing in free verse is the easiest. It is the most popular too because it has the minimum niumber of rules. Are there even any rules ![]() That's why it's called free verse. It has no rules except for the general rules that apply to poetry. In my next class, I will start lessons on how to write the your poem in free verse. Perhaps you have written a poem before, it is most probably in free verse. Perhaps you have read a poem before, it is most probably in free verse. This seven line poem is also in free verse. We gather here tonight. Feeding the curios organs in our insides. A monk and his students in the moonlight. Are no different from us in real-life. Just that. They learn in the moonlight. We, in the e-light. |

pls my question... is there any difference between a poetry and a poem? |
| Re: Poetry Classes For Beginners - NPC (Signup Thread) by Nobody: 9:33pm On Dec 16, 2014 |
dre11:I can't really say which is more braintasking generally. But I found it harder to write a story than to write a poem. 2 -There are things called poetry devices. There are a lot of them. They distinguish between poetry and prose when used. One is rhyme. You will never find sentences of prose ending with rhyming words. The devices will be taught as the course moves on |

| Re: Poetry Classes For Beginners - NPC (Signup Thread) by Nobody: 9:35pm On Dec 16, 2014 |
youngcrysta:Yes. There is a difference. Poetry is the art. Poem is the product of the art. Singing is the art, songs are the product. |

Before my class next week, I will present to you 12 radical reasons you should know how to write poems. The above is not a reason. It is just a differentiation between poetry and prose. |
