This happened to me a few years ago. A friend of mine wanted to give my child her children's used clothes and I said NO. She got angry but I didn't care.

Those insulting the OP probably live outside naija in countries where this practise is not perceived as an insult. Here in naija it is. It's like saying the man can't afford to clothe his kids.

So oga poster, say NO. Let no one look down on your kids.

Nowhere in the post was it indicated that anyone made a demand. Go back read and modify your post.
My own is that, you should read, comprehend and advice accordingly. Don't be hasty to offer advice.

is weird, I sometimes find it funny when some of my cousins pack some used clothes and shoes for me wen I visit. I obviously don't need dem. even as I packed dem, I just don't give it to anybody, I watch d kind of clothes I normally see with d person before I offer my gifts.

next time dat happens, go to a tushite boutique and get some tushites clothes and send it down to her in pH. dat will send a clear message

Na wa o! Your wife's cousin did not get it right at all. She should have included a few new cloths too. Why send used cloth to a child all the time? If its a one off thing no problem but constantly no way. I give cloths to people but I always include new ones too.

@mployer, what is wrong with a man being proud and insisting that he has a responsibility to clothe his children and that he has not failed at doing so? He said that this cousin has never been to see them and knows nothing about their real circumstances. Additionally, how do you know the intent of this cousin? Are you omniscient or something?

@kingmorgan, how you feel is perfectly understandable. A man feels insulted by gestures like that. They don't mean the same to him as they do to a woman.

For a woman gestures like this are at least as much for bonding as for practical need. The fact that you don't need those things is only one factor in her eyes (and the less important factor at that). Bonding between the two cousins is another factor.

I would advise that since you can afford to provide for yourself, you should probably reserve some of the best of what she sends for your kids to keep fostering the good feelings between the two families and give the rest to those who need them. And you should probably invite the cousin over to visit for a few days so that she can get more familiar with your circumstances.
