1.Many parents,especially the elites send their wards to fee-paying schools where the medium is English. They believe English will guarantee good performance and help them get a good job . 2.Some parents ban their children from using their mother tongue at home even though both parents speak the same language. 3.In certain schools, particularly the indigenous languages are described as 'vernacular'.pejorativly used to refer to the indigenous languages as local, primitive and non-standard. Therefore in such schools,the moment you get to the compound,you will see an inscription boldly written in a conspicuous place:VERNACULAR SPEAKING IS HIGHLY PROHIBITED..any student caught speaking any language but English or French is heavily punished by beating or fining. 4.Proprietors of nursery and primary schools disregard the provision in the national policy of education with impunity. 5.Indigenous languages are accorded an inferior status in the curriculum 9 Likes 1 Share |

6. There is a great disparity in the amount of time devoted to the study of indigenous languages compared with English at school. For example in secondary schools in the Yoruba speaking states,Yoruba is taught for three periods of 40minutes each per week,where as English language and Literature is taught for eight periods per week,regardless of the fact that English has only 2 components where as Yoruba has three components: Language, Literature &Culture. Altogether they are given only three periods. And these same things are done to all languages of Nigeria; thereby, killing it gradually. 7. In the recruitment of teachers and allocation of teachers to schools, English and Science teachers are given priority by the Ministry of Education and school principals. Even when the schools' board/the Ministry of Education can't immediately provide such teachers,they are appointed and paid under the auspices of parents teachers' association(PTA). But our national Languages teacher are not treated in such manner. 8. In some cases graduates of other courses like History,Political Science, Sociology,Religious Studies, e.t.c who are native speakers of Yoruba are asked to teach Yoruba to make up their periods. Thinking anybody can teach it, they push these people to teach a subject they never read in school. Surprisingly, the students are always seen correcting the teachers. I used Yoruba as the major example because it is one of the three national languages, and it is the nearest to me. We have 18,565,000 speakers of the language. However, the Yoruba experience is a replica of what happens with other local languages taught concurrently in our schools presently. Although lecturers and student of the linguistics department are trying hard to make sure our languages does not die, it is up to you to keep our 527+ languages from dying out completely and being replaced by a foreign language: English. 17 Likes 2 Shares |

Divepen: 4.proprietors of nursery and primary schools disregard the provision in the national policy of education with impunity.It beats my imagination why government show allow British Curriculum that negates all we took for as an African society. School stand proud to say they are offering British Curriculum not Nigerian Curriculum. The result is children coming back from school looking like total strangers to their community especially if if coming back from school means getting locked up in a fenced compound. 10 Likes |

Nigerians view anybody that doesnt speak English as inferior, we blame Pej as if English should be a pre requisite for any communication. In my University days the best student wasnt able to express himself very well but he knew the right formular for every equation. Speaking our own language should be inculcated into our wards before we lost our future to western culture and language. 7 Likes 1 Share |

9. We don't value our tribal names anymore. Instead, we settle for Shantel, Andre, Mason, Cameron and Olivia. I'm not saying we shouldn't have English names, but our native names should be first then English name should be Secondary or even Eliminated sef. 26 Likes 2 Shares |

Op, I share your sentiment, but unfortunately, that is one of the price of Evolution. It will interest you to know that the USA was not originally an All English speaking country, They have local and indigenous languages and applies to the UK. Infact, up till today, there're still people speaking indigenous languages in Wales and Scotland - alas, a few of them. And since we are modeling our country towards this DEVELOPED nations, this is the price to pay. 5 Likes |
