If the NSCIA wants to call out its members to cause crisis in Nigeria as a result of its stand on Palestinian, let them do that quickly. Enough of this hype. I see religion dividing this country more than ethnicity. |

decode55:I always keep on hearing about plans to islamise Nigeria. While I know there are fundamentalists....tell me, how possible would it be for anyone using government powers to islamise the country...without provoking war.? In Chad in the 70's....one of their leaders tried to make everyone follow the culture of his tribe....of course there was war....which took chad years to come out from. And we saw the effect of the Islamisation issue in Sudan....the breakup of the country (Garang wanted it to stay united....but even he could not stop the inevitable). So tell me....while I know that there are some jokers who actually want to do this....how would Nigeria be islamised without there being one big war that would make Somalia look good? pLUS...MILLIONS of naira of investments lost....especially by many of the same islamist hausas that you think want to do this. Plus the hig refugee crisis. Plus the millions dead, and wounded. Plus the eventual threat of foreign itervention? And is the Christian faith of Nigerians so weak that they would suddenly change religion at the drop of a hat. Would any leader...even a Muslim...risk decades of relative stability for some silly fantasy? Please....stop scaremongering. We must fight this elections on the issues....the most important of which is the reduction of the oil price. Not on silly scaremongering that would only create more problems. |

Tony Blair once said and I quote. "The battles of this century are less likely to be the product of extreme political ideology like those of the 20th century but they could easily be fought around the questions of cultural and religious differences". My point is Religion is becoming the base for political Ideology so any one who expect me to vote an extremist like Buhari should have a rethink. Religious extremism is now springing its head in the south west that's d reason for their support of buhari. And the non muslims who supports this extremist (buhari) are not seeing the bigger picture. As for the prof. He should hide his head in shame because staying neutral is the smartest move by Jonathan |

A lot of people comment with sentiment without research or history? The question is why did America or Isreal find the need to pressure Nigeria to abstain from voting? This is not about OIC or Christian or Muslim, it is about a nation strategic interest and its stand vis-a-vis global stand against oppression/apartheid etc. If you look at more than half of the countries that voted for a Palestinian state are Christian countries. South Africa has more christian than muslims but they always vote and stand for the palestinian state. Nigeria has always stood for and stand by the palestinian state. The question now is why the shift in foreign policy? the answer is simple - GEJ. We now have a president who views and take decision base on religion/ethnicity et al. He also can easily be pressurised and succumb to external influence. How can you explain a president who just few days ago protest lack of assistance from USA and now succumbing to US pressure not to vote? Correct Nigerias vote or not voting will not change the outcome of the palestinian course because US would have vetoed it afterall, but why will US shift the onus to Nigeria? why cant Nigeria stick to their centuries old stand and allow US to veto the votes? Once again GEJ by this vote has clearly shown how parochial he can be with his sence of reasoning. Once again this is not about christian/muslim, it is about a clear shift in our foreign policy. Nigeria have always stood with the oppress in their foreign policy from the fight against aphartied and the rest. This administration has now change the course of our foreign deplomacy to be a reaction to christian or muslim nation. its a pity this is what we see even internally now. Finally on the issue of joining OIC, who cares? what do the average Nigerian muslim gain from Nigeria being a member of OIC? nothing. However, remember just yesterday the Finance minister lectured that she is going to get a loan from the ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK to help cushion the effect of the oil price slump. This i believe is the only reason successive government Christian/muslim have retain Nigerian membership of the OIC. It has nothing to do with Islamisation. Nobody can Islamise Nigeria. it is not possible and every sane mind knows that. but its easy to use it as a political tool, but nobody has the interest and nobody can islamise Nigeria. full stop. |

yungcyrus:Actually...there is a peace agreement...the Oslo accordof 1993. The sticky issues are 1.Jewish settlements in Palestinian land.(MOST set up after 1967). 2.The right of return of Palestinian Arabs to villages and settlements in Israel proper that they left behind in 1948.... 3.The status of East Jerusalem....should it be Palestinian capital...or Israeli Capital.? Like i said....it is complicated....and if there is anyone to blame....it is the old Roman Emperor Titus....and Hadrian who drove out most Jews between 70-132AD. |

flexyfranky:UK support for Palestine....now that is a long and complex story. Telling it requires another thread. Suffice that from 1917-48...the British were in charge of the Holy Land...and they tried to keep the peace between the Jews and the Arabs....but by 1948...THEY got fed up and left. The State of Israel was declared at that time...followed by the first Arab-Israeli war. |

i am concerned about our country Nigeria. It is the right of Supreme council to ask questions and release press statement whenever they so require. I will also be interested in Nigeria official explaination for abstaining from voting at the last minute. The Israeli prime minister expressed his appreciation to JEG for keeping his promise on the issue. Therefore situation is not about being neutral, it is about supporting Israel. Listed in the content of the resolution is for Israel to stop occupation by 2017 and for Palestine be recognised as a STATE. We have all condemed Hamas for his military approach and now frustated a democratic approach to freedom. Palestianians are not less humans they have the right to their own government, right to worship without being surrounded by guns, right to travel and return without scrutiny, right to their land without being occupied........ |

It would be advisable to read the whole story rather than gorgitate on a so called professor who lacks the understanding of the entire context. New York (CNN) -- The U.N. Security Council, in a close 8-2 vote with five abstentions, on Tuesday voted down a Palestinian statehood resolution that set a deadline for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territories by 2017. Eight nations voted for the draft resolution -- one vote short of the necessary nine to be adopted -- including Jordan, which sponsored the resolution, and three permanent Security Council members: China, Russia and France. The United States voted against the resolution on the table and had been expected to exercise its permanent council member authority and veto the measure, had it passed. The Security Council consists of 15 members, five permanent and 10 rotating members. The permanent five, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States, have veto power to block any resolution. The resolution called for an end of Israeli troops in Palestinian territories -- including the West Bank -- by 2017 and set a 12-month deadline for a peace solution, with two separate states. It also identified East Jerusalem as the capital of what would be called Palestine. Palestine currently is not recognized as a state. In November 2012, the General Assembly voted to upgrade the status of the Palestinians to "non-member observer state." Jordanian envoy: World ready for move Dina Kawar, Jordan's ambassador to the United Nations and the sponsor of the draft, said she hoped the Security Council would have adopted the resolution because the council "bears both the legal and the moral responsibilities to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is the crux of the conflict in the Middle East." Elements in the draft resolution, including the right for Palestinian people for self-determination, a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine and an end to what it calls Israeli occupation were "acceptable not only to members of the Security Council but to the international community as a whole," Kawar said. U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said no other country in the world has invested more than the United States in pursuing peace between Israel and the Palestinians, but said the resolution "would undermine efforts to get back to an atmosphere that makes it possible to achieve two states for two people." Power said that the current resolution was "deeply unbalanced" and instead of giving a voice to both sides, only considered the concerns of one. "Today's vote should not be interpreted as a victory for an unsustainable status quo, instead it should serve as a wake-up call to catalyze all interested parties to take constructive, responsible steps to achieve a two-state solution," Power said. Australia also voted against the measure. The Palestinian representative at the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, told the diplomats that it is "most regrettable that the Security Council remains paralyzed." "The repeated requests for us to 'wait,' and 'wait,' and 'wait' while our people are suffering, while our people are besieged, while our land is being colonized, and while the two-state solution is being destroyed and the prospects for peace are evaporating, must understand that such requests are not viable under these circumstances and are unsustainable," he said. Israeli: "Political games' continue "The Palestinians have found every possible opportunity to avoid direct negotiations with Israel," said Israel Nitzan, a counselor representing Israel at the meeting, and called the most recent "unilateral" draft the latest endeavor in a "never-ending string of political games." "I have news for the Palestinians: you cannot agitate and provoke your way to a state," Nitzan said. Five countries abstained from the vote, including permanent member United Kingdom. UK Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told the Security Council, "We consider President (Mahmoud) Abbas a man of peace and understand the pressure that the Palestinian leadership has been under to act and their frustration at the lack of progress. But we are disappointed that the normal, and necessary, negotiation did not take place on this occasion. " After the meeting, Jordan's Kawar told reporters that although she would have liked more consultations and negotiations to "come up with a product that would be acceptable to the 15" [member states,] the importance of this resolution was "to put some momentum and dynamics in the Security Council." http://edition.cnn.com/2014/12/30/world/palestinian-statehood-draft-vote/ |

luvmijeje:You should have such questions at the back of your mind that, what if we voted and grant them their freedom and their enemies Israel,USA, Britain & other friends of Israel decided to go against us? Or what if it was that Nigeria voted against them? Think beyond personal gain pls, if the Muslims did not vote for him and we live in peace without external enemies is better that shooting the Israelis and their likes just to win election that the external enemies will fight against the country for not standing out. What i read up there was that Nigeria did not vote. PLS Understand that we are developing countries, we must not do things others are doing. THEY DID IT FOR ME AND YOU, SO ENJOY THE PEACE WHILE IT LAST PLS LEAVE SENTIMENT OUT. We have a war in our hands already why should we create more? I came here to blame Nigeria for not voting but rather through the comments of the well educated and less myopic individuals we have here, i retrieved my stance. |

How do they expect us to support a statehood rooted in Islamic Ideologies, an ideology that Nigeria is totally fighting and one which is the chief reason Buhari will not be voted for ? We have a better sovereign friend in Israel. Palestine, sorry. |

Palistine is Arab before the the invation and occupation by Jews from the Soviet Union and the West with the help of Britain and the US. The Palistinians have resisted the occupation and now they are only clamouring for a two states solution which will help stop this fighting between the Arabs and the Jewish state of Israel. But the Israel didn't want that to happen because at it stands they have the upper hand. The world is fed up with the conflict in that region that is why many nations of the world and even the United nations are backing this statehood solution for the Palistinians. Nigeria and many other countries have always encourage a final solution to this conflict. Successive governments have followed this line of foreign policy. For Nigeria now to abstain from voting for Palistine to have an independent State status in the UN security council is not only a blow to the Palistinians but a complete reversal of our foreign policy of backing colonised nations seeking for independence which we have pursued for a very long time. One thing for sure is that this will not stop those we back from reversing their policies towards Nigeria nor change their ways of frustrating our development which is a threat to them. |

Don't know y this Islamic organisation always open their mouth and dish out total rubbish They called UN in actual fact itz "doing what is best for business (ones country)my country 1st then the rest .. Infact we suppose to vote for Israel cuz we are benefiting from them cuz life they say is give and take Did we have any bilateral relationship or any sort of relationship with Palestine? Am sure GEJ must have considered these war loving Muslims, so as to prevent their cows from going on rampage again on Christians He decided to honour our non-alignment policy... Yet they are still pained Only the senseless will think this is not the right decision... Stay on the fence let others decide the issue Why don't they rubbish others countries that outrighly voted against the decision Instead of pouring their anger that emergence of Sharia - controlled country have been subdued on GEJ |

The strategic shift in Alliance my friend is not because of boko haram my friend. you will find the reason purely in our commanda in chief psyche. if you read his mind and methodology you will find the answer. its the same reason why their is soo much division in our nation now. Of the 5 parmanent members of the UN security council, only USA did not vote in support. Even Britian abstain not because they dont support, but because the demand further discussion first. So this is a major foreign policy change by our nation and other none alligned countries are stunned. GEJ for you. |

International politics and diplomacy is often devoid of morality and right sense of judgement. It is often negotiated on the basis of ideological convictions, sphere of interest or national interest. Morality and good conscience is often left to issues of crime against humanity and humanitarian causes. In effect, the sovereignty of Palestine is more of a political aspiration which is determined by interest and ideology rather than humanitarian causes. If Nigeria supports the position of Palestine's independence, it does not guarantee its attainment. Nigeria has always been in the middle by its foreign policy as a leading member of the Non-Aligned Movement. It may even harm Nigeria's national interest and derail its attempt to achieve our future goal of permanent membership of the Security Council from the African region. Britain has been a major player supporting the independence of the Palestine and yet voted against it. Though USA have always supported the sovereignty and survival of the State of Israel, it obvious that the two remains one of Nigeria's strongest allies in International diplomacy. It would be fool hardy for Nigeria to vote against the interest of its former colonial masters, unless we are going to throw our past relationship and future aspirations in the thrash can. To abstain from voting is therefore a declaration that MY HANDS ARE TIED. If Nigeria had a choice of voting on the grounds of morality and good conscience, it is obvious that our vote will be for the independence of the Palestine. Nigeria had benefited much from Israel but it would not holistically dissuade us doing what is right, if the right atmosphere is available. One thing is certain, as long as international terrorism, militancy, islamization and forceful use of arms across borders between Israel and Palestine is unresolved, there will be unending issues in the determination of the Palestine State. The wars of the local militia is enough reason to fear and the spit over effects on other regions. As long as the world leaders are unable to predict with certainty, the goals and capabilities of Palestine leaders in managing the future and fortunes of the Palestine State with clear definition of commitment to international and regional peace and security in the Middle East with evidence of tolerance to all faith and sects to thrive, the independence of Palestine will be compromised. For USA to support Palestine's independence, issues involved with determining the geographical space and territory to be conceded to Palestine including the limits ot access to Jerusalem, Bethelehem, Gaza strip, occupied territory etc must be resolved. It would be difficult to have a highly islamized Palestine in Middle East like Syria, Iran and Iraq (Arabs) because that would further heighten the problems of Israel and other Western nations and their allies. The history of that region has shown in the last ten centuries that they have pursued international diplomacy and war from the point of expansionist agenda of jihadists who wish to either islamise the world and spread arabic culture from North and Eastern Africa to Southern Europe and Asia region, looking at the expanse of Ottoman Turkish Empire and the showdown leading to the fight with the CRUSADERS. The same is unabated till date, looking at the scenario in the Middle East particularly in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Liberating a people as the world did in Lebanon did not bring total peace to that region. If Palestine are left to run their own state, the world need to provide a lot of answers for their future engagements and agenda. You don't strengthen a belligerent to have capacity and recognition to put you in a corner. Acquisition of nuclear arms by such state may render the world totally obliterated overnight since they believe that killing the infidels (people of those faith and conviction) will grant them access to Al-Janna. The western allies would find it difficult to further strengthening of the Arab world at the detriment of other world powers and their allies because it would put would be putting the world in further jeopardy, if care is not taken. Moreover, the passage of the Gaza strip to Asia from Europe and the use of the airspace across the region by various allies requires a deep reflection on the character of the Palestine State and their benefits to all allies. When international diplomacy and politics is considered within this scope and other emanating features, the grant of independence to Palestine will not be determined purely from the character of the spirit of self-determination, but on the strength of the character and spirit of regional stability, world peace and security. Let Palestine make more efforts to assure the world of their readiness not to use their freedom to disturb others nor to oppress their own people and be convinced that political sovereignty and independence is not a matter of purely self determination, but of world peace and security. It is only then that morality and good conscience would help in their favour. I love my moslem brothers just like my christian faithful, but I will rather be silent or support any idea to guarantee peace in the face of freedom. If a potential law breaker is left in prison or correction centre to amend its way, it gives the people some measure of peace, rather than to let him loose and commit another crime. Freedom is a prize that must be given, if only it will guarantee peace, equality and respect of other peoples' right.
