As political manoeuvres towards the 2015 general elections intensify, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is jittery over the moves by Vice President Namadi Sambo to reconcile aggrieved members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across the country, Daily Sun can now reveal.

Vice President Sambo has embarked on an unexpected peace drive across the country, reconciling aggrieved aspirants of the party and galvanising support to ensure victory of the party in the coming polls.

Sources close to the APC revealed that the party was unsettled by the successes so far recorded by Sambo, especially in some key states.

The source said: “The APC is clearly shocked by the recent successful reconciliation between the two major contenders for the PDP ticket in Lagos State, which is an APC stronghold. Opposition leaders were pleased with the earlier division in the Lagos PDP following disagreements on conduct of the primary election. But now the story is different.

It was also gathered that the strategy by Sambo has also effectively checked an impending mass exodus from the PDP following disagreements over the conduct of primary elections in some states. The APC was banking on such defections to consolidate its hope for victory in 2015.

The Lagos APC has since noticed the implication of the reconciliation between the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Jimmy Agbaje and his major opponent, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro. It was Vice President Sambo that succeeded in bringing the two men together with both agreeing to work together for the victory of PDP in Lagos.

“The APC is apparently aware of the PDP inroads in the state, that is why the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola and other party stalwarts have stepped up campaign for their party’s candidate because they are now aware that it is not going to be a tea party,” the source revealed.

The Sambo reconciliation train has also been to Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and his home state, Kaduna.

It was further gathered that in all the states, Sambo recorded success, as all aspirants agreed to work with the flag bearers of the party in bringing electoral victory to the PDP this year.

In Lagos State, for instance, the APC is said to be jittery over possible protest votes by the large population of voters from the South East over a protracted disagreement with the Fashola regime, which deported Igbo from the state in 2012.
