Rich4god:Um what you described is a form of oath taking. It has the semblance of an assertory or affirmative oath where one calls on God to witness to a present or past fact. In principle, the Church is not against oath taken when it is done seriously. Matter of fact, the Church actually holds oath taken in high regard since it gives credence to the omnipotence of his divine majesty. Oaths can be taken directly where one swears by God or calls on God to act as a witness or implicitly when one swears by the creatures instead of the creator. The case you described is an example of an implicit oath. Implicit oaths aren't wrong if done right. What's important here is that one does not lose sight of the creator when using the created as the object of the oath taken. The above may seem to contradict Matthew 5:34-36 but that is a different matter. No time to explain this. |

Thanks striktlymi The case you described is an example of an implicit oath. Implicit oaths aren't wrong if done right. What's important here is that one does not lose sight of the creator when using the created as the object of the oath taken. How do I know when its done right/wrong... And from what I could hear that day, they man was swearing with the sand and not God. |

SalC:I've been around conservatively. Happy new year. |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by Nobody: 8:23pm On Jan 04, 2015 |
Rich4god:'Swearing' by the creature is not necessarily wrong. It would be wrong though if it is done such that the creature is seen as an 'end' in itself. For instance, if one goes to a shrine to swear. Though a creature but this does not glorify God in any way. The case you present may be wrong depending on the disposition of the individual. If the individual oath taker did it such that he holds strong some pagan beliefs then it would be wrong but this is not saying that every implicit oath is wrong. |

Happy new year to all. Just saying hi after many months of absence. |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by Ubenedictus(m): 1:16am On Jan 05, 2015 |
Rich4god:the church allows swearing, like the one they do in court, but the case you described is rather disturbing, that seems superstitous and fetish. To such cases i'll rather advise "let your yes be yes and your no be no, anything else comes from the evil one". |

Hello Everyone, Good to be part of this family. I'm humbled to be a Catholic. I am currently having big misunderstanding in my relationship right now. My Guy was a Catholic(baptized And confirmed) until he left for RCCG in 2012( to rekindle his spiritual Life as he said). we are compatible in other aspects of our relationship Except the church we worship. Right now he stands on his ground that he's Not coming back to the church And he won't let me be Where I am. I love him, But for me I'm Not leaving the Catholic church For anybody Not even my parents. Please I need your kind advice. Thanks |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by jnrbayano(m): 11:42am On Jan 05, 2015 |
deracathy:Sometimes you love someone by letting him/her go. You had your catholic faith before he came along. He will come around if he's yours. The bold is my advice to you. |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by jnrbayano(m): 11:54am On Jan 05, 2015 |
SalC:I don't know where a good oath/swearing stops and bad one begins, for this reason, I wouldn't wanna perform the act no matter the circumstance. As for the Church stance, I don't know. |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by Nobody: 12:45pm On Jan 05, 2015 |
Hmmmm. Ok Noted, Thanks very much. jnrbayano: |

deracathy:Looks like your mind is made up already |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by italo: 12:54pm On Jan 05, 2015 |
deracathy:I dont think you should be having a "misunderstanding" with him. I think you should break up with him now. Because you cannot leave the Catholic faith and he has said he wont let you stay in it. Receive communion in the hand so that you can hold Jesus...then go hold your "guy" in your hands. Whom do you choose? |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by SalC: 12:55pm On Jan 05, 2015 |
jnrbayano:Fine, so you don't do the "I swear to God" too? |
| Re: A Thread For Catholics by jnrbayano(m): 1:00pm On Jan 05, 2015 |
SalC:It is not in my habit. Anytime I must have utterred such, I usually feel bad about it. I avoid saying such. |
