CHAPTER TEN Queen Kendra took great pains to turn her head in the direction of the door of her chamber after she heard it creak open. She had turned just in time to see her husband, King Gavyne, walk into the well furnished room. The king made his way to his wife's bed and flopped on a high stool beside it. He regarded his once plump, beautiful wife in silence. Now, she was so emanciated that she exactly looked like a skeleton covered with a layer of skin. "Good morning my lord," Queen Kendra greeted in a low raspy voice. "Morning my queen. How do you feel now?" "I am fine," She made to reply, but a violent cough siezed her midway, muffling the better part of her reply and sending her lurching forward like a unmanned cart into the King's arms. "It's okay. I understand," The King said as he patted her back gently. "Have you found my son?" The Queen asked, looking into the king's eyes after a moment of awkward silence. The King looked away sadly. "Not yet. We have sent many parties in search of him. I believe he shall be found very soon." "Please find him. I want to see him before I go." "Don't talk like that. You will recover from this illness. Chrellen assured me of that." It was the Queen's turn to shake her head in sadness. "Chrellen is probably afraid of telling you the truth. I will never rise from this bed. This sickness has eaten too deep into my system." Before the king could remark about her pessimism. The queen quickly asked, "And what is this I'm hearing about you going on a campaign with your knights?" "How did you hear that?" King Gavyne asked in surprise. "That is supposed to be a secret myself and a few other people." The Queen gave a weary half smile. "You don't expect a news of that gravity to remain secret. Do you? My maids told me. They heard from a Lord. It is the talk of the town now." The King silently cursed whoever it was that leaked the news. "Well, since you have heard it already. There's nothing I have to tell." "Tell me if it is true that you'll be leading the knights of the realm against the bands of robbers like I heard." "That's right. We intend to set out at first light tomorrow." "Don't go please," The Queen begged her husband. Her large blue eyes glistened with tears as she made that plea. King Gavyne was totally taken aback. "Why?" "I have seen bad things about that campaign." "That's funny," The king remarked. "I don't remember you ever being a seer." "No. I had dreams, nightmares about this campaign and you know how my dreams usually come true." "What bad things did you see?" "Bad things like your knights being defeated and you getting killed. Don't go please. I'll advice that the campaign be cancelled." The king shook his head vigorously in outright refusal. "The campaign cannot be cancelled. We must recover the valuables plundered from our coffers by those b*stards." "Then don't go with your men. Let another person take charge." "Relax my queen. You are just being delusional. Nothing bad is going to happen me or any one else," King Gavyne assured his wife. After some trivial talks, the King kissed Queen Kendra's forehead and bade her goodbye. Hot tears streaked down the Queen's cheeks as she watched her husband's retreating figure. She had a strong presentiment that that would be the last time she would see him alive. |

* * * Frasser was taking a nap on the only chair in his cell when the sound of the iron bars swinging open jolted him awake. He opened his eyes just in time to see two guards pushing a tall blond chap into the cell. "Hey!" Frasser called out to the guards. "Who is this you are bringing in?" "Your newest cellmate," one guard answered. "Treat him nice," the other guard added and they both left laughing. Frasser regarded the new inmate. The chap was tall with a slight build, blond hair and a very handsome face. Frasser experienced a familiar pulsing in his nether region as he observed the features of the new boy. "Come here," the cell leader ordered in a hoarse voice. "Why should I?" "Because I'm the boss around here." "To hell with you and your authority!" Prince Galleine fired back. Frasser smiled to himself. They were always like at first. He knew that in no distant time this fresh meat will be squirming under his mammoth weight. "Bring him here," Frasser ordered the two other inmates in the cell. They both rushed at the Prince. One of them brandished a deadly looking dagger while the other kept faith with his fists that looked as big as pawpaw fruit. The Prince allowed himself the luxury of a small laugh. These men are in for some serious whacking, he thought. The unarmed prisoner attacked first, he attempted to grab the prince by the collar of his shirt and drag him to Frasser but the Prince quickly evaded him and then sent a damaging kick to his knee cap. The prisoner fell to the ground with a sharp cry of pain. The other inmate wasted no time in charging at the Prince. He leapt at Prince Galleine with the sole aim of injuring him by burying his dagger in Prince Galleine's arm but the Prince had other plans. He spun around with the grace of a ballerina and then struck his right leg out so that it connected with the base of the inmate's neck. There was a loud snapping sound and in the next moment, the inmate fell to the ground, dead from a broken neck. "Do you still want me to come?" The Prince asked with a crooked smile playing on his lips. Frasser was irked beyond measured. "You will pay dearly for this," He roared and then rushed at the Prince, berserk with anger. Now, if the Prince had easily dispatched the first two inmates, it was because they were broomsticks compared to Frasser's mountainous frame. Finn was the biggest man the Prince had seen before but Frasser was two times bigger. Merely watching Frasser run across the run cell towards him sent shivers down the Prince's spine. As the huge inmate neared him, Prince Galleine sprang into action. He quickly retrieved the dagger lying on the floor and in the moment that followed, plunged it into the onrushing man's thigh. To the Prince's horror, the dagger did not stop the big man. Hell, he did not even flinch. "Needles don't do nothing to me," Frasser said in that hoarse voice of his as he grabbed the prince by the neck and hurled him like a sack of grain against the wall. The Prince yelped in pain as he crashed into the cold, hard wall of the cell. He attempted to spring to his feet immediately but Frasser had already pounced on him and was raining punches on him. The Prince's shout attracted the guards, who promptly restrained Frasser from wreaking more havoc. "Hey, I told you to treat him nice. Didn't I?" "He didn't want to be treated nice," Frasser replied gruffly. "Don't worry," The guard said. "I'd make sure that you two are paired in the upcoming inmate fights. That way, you'll be able to expend your fury in the front of everyone in this facility." Prince Galleine froze. Every pain he felt, the throbbing head, the burning cheeks, aching ribs and every other ache, temporarily dulled with his jaw dropping in shock as the message in the guard's words sank in his brain. So he'd have to face this crazy brute again? Christ! |

* * * The expanse of land around the Northworth mountain was always desolate. That is not exactly a thing of surprise since the mountain was situated deep in the heart of the Distein forest, a forest widely believed to be evil. Legends had it that the wildest beasts and the darkest beings resided in Distein. Even the dreaded Negirrel was said to have a resting place there. Presently, an average heighted, puckered haired young man by the name Elliott made his way unceremoniously to the base of the Northworth mountain. It was his turn to watch over the tents of the other members of the search party. The party had trailed the Prince to this place and they were camping there for the night. They would continue their search the next day. Elliot took his seat on one of the rocks that littered the base of the mountain. He set the burning torch to one side and then he unsheathed his double edged sword from its scabbard and admired the markings around the hilt. That sword had been given to him seven years ago by his father who was a blacksmith. He had only been thirteen then and the sword had been a trifle heavy for him to wield, but he had kept on practising with it till he had became quite adept at using. A high profile Knight, Sir Sylvain, had seen him compete at a tournament for minors and had been quite impressed by his excellent swordmanship and he had ensured that young Elliott joined his retinue of squires. Being in the retinue of a top notch knight like Sir Sylvain had opened Elliot's eyes to the glory and grandeur that usually accompained knighthood and he had set his sights on becoming a knight of the realm like his diminutive mentor. But some unfortunate events that occurred later on had made it kind of obvious that he was not destined to be a knight. Elliot suddenly heard the sound of approaching footstep behind him and he turned sharply to see a young ruddy fellow with clean shaven head sneaking up to him with a sword in his hand. "Shaun, you should know better than sneaking up to people in times like this." "I thought you were asleep. I wanted to give you a shock." "Idi*t, come back when I'm not on watch and less alert," Elliott rebuked. "What are you doing here by the way?" Shaun chuckled and scanned the area for a rock that could adequately support his big posterior. "I couldn't sleep a wink. I thought it would be better if I came here to keep you company. Have you heard the latest news in the camp?" "About the fresh tracks?" Elliot asked, although he knew deep down that could not be the latest news. "No man, that is stale. This one is about the treasury at Austieres." "What about it?" "It was looted by some bandits led by Von Descher," Shaun revealed. "Millions of gold bars carted away." "Christ!" Elliott exclaimed. "How could it happen? That place used to be as impregnable as anything." "I'm surprised myself," Shaun admitted. "Anyways, the King will be leading the knights of the realm on the campaign against them tomorrow." "Then we shouldn't worry our a*ses much about this issue, we should instead worry about finding the prince before anything happens to him," Elliot opined. "Nothing will happen to the Prince. The rebels daren't touch him." "The rebels?" Elliot echoed in surprise. "Are they now responsible for the Prince's disappearance?" Shaun nodded in reply. "Then why the hell are we still searching when the army can easily go and tear down their stupid facility at Cevout?" "Because what I said is only a hunch. I don't know for sure," Shaun replied earnestly. "Damn you," Elliot wanted to say but he couldn't because at that moment he heard sounds of numerous footsteps from the surrounding shrubs. "Did you hear that?" he asked Shaun. "No. I think you are just . . " Shaun stopped too because mid way through his reply he caught sight of not less than fifty fully armed men dressed in the ninja like uniform of the rebels rushing into the areas around the party's camp. Shaun and Elliott exchanged glances. At that rare moment their minds mirrored each other. "It is either we are hallucinating or we are in big trouble," Shaun whispered to his companion. "The latter is more like it," Elliott whispered back. THE END OF CHAPTER TEN. |
