I have never and will ever believe Messi was the best player of the year in 2010.

My pick was Sneijder. He was the midfield genius of the treble winning Inter team. He was also the midfield genius of the Dutch side that reached the finals. Sneijder was also one of the World Cup scorers.

If not Sniejder, it should have been Forlan who was the highest goal scorer in the Europa League and clearly the best player of the World Cup.

It is not about a tournament but sum total performance. In 2014. CR7 was clearly the best.

And what has fifa favouritism towards Messi has to do with there recent problems which are over due?are u telling me Fifa$uefa were not aware of the "child trafficking"b4 but decide to turn blind eye.Mr,messi was a little above average last season as simple as that.

Ronaldo deserve it than any other player in the game! He's won it all 'xcluding world cup'!!!

Messi shouldn't have been in the top 3 in 2010 because Forlan(europa cup,WC best player,5goals @ d WC,scored both goals that in europa final),Milito(Scored the goals that won inter the Scudetto,ucl final(2goals),Coppa italia final,he was voted uefa club best player$forward),Sneidjer was the center of every good thing Inter$Holland achieved that year(ucl,serie A,coppa Italia,5goals @ d WC,WC finalist).

Errm...I actually said to myself that I wasn't going to get into this Messi-Ronaldo debate! But for the sake of the sensible ones here, I should just make a few points! And by the way, I am a lifelong Barcelona fan and Messi's number 1 fan!

Lionel Messi is one of the best players in the world today not just because of the things he has achieved with Barcelona and the Argentine team, but because of what he has contributed to football! Messi is a joy to watch! The crucial goals, assists- he is just a blessing to our generation.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to be crowned the best player of 2014. In as much as it breaks my heart, Ronaldo has shown ruthless consistency in firing Real Madrid to the top of the world! I don't want to bother myself with whatever thing people say about him outside football, but when it comes to what he has achieved in the past year, he has been legendary!

We should note that the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo is just something that is bound to happen! Football fans compare players, clubs, and leagues! Before Messi and Ronaldo came into the picture, there was Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry! So this is bound to happen!

But the fact that Ronaldo has fired his team to a lot of trophies this year, he deserves that award! He has scored important goals and has broken a lot of records! Lionel Messi has had a quiet year by his standards BUT that doesn't take away the fact that he is a LEGEND and he will be talked about centuries after he has retired! The same with Ronaldo!

And to answer the OP's question, for 2014, Ronaldo was better than Messi and Neuer.

thnx bro, but if messi had won the world cup, choosing between Ronaldo and Messi for the ballon d'or would be a difficult choice to make. They both did well in 2013, its just that one shine pass the other. But i can never forget the clear chances missed by Gonzalo Higuain and Rodrigo Palacio in the final match against Germany, may god reward them both

chai, i remember messi's pass to palacio, i saw how devastated was when he missed...same thing with higuain.
If messi had won the world cup, the rivalry between him and cr7 would have been a closed chapter.
