Alert! Abuja-bound Flights Diverted Due To Dust Haze by BokoHaramm: 2:33pm On Jan 06, 2015 |
Report reaching the stables of elombah.com indicates that all Abuja-bound airplanes has been re-routed to nearby airports due to heavy dust haze emanating from the Harmattan, which makes landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja challenging. It would be recalled that early December 2014, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted dust haze conditions with visibility of about 5000 metres in the central states on Saturday, Dec. 20. According to the forecast, the northern states will experience dust haze conditions with visibility, greater than 5000 meters in the morning hours. The forecast stated that visibility would deteriorate in the region toward the evening hours to local visibility of less than 2000 metres at locations in the North-East. 揟he southern coastal areas will experience misty conditions in the morning hours and cloudy conditions with slight chances of localised rain showers. The rain showers are expected over few places like Eket and Port Harcourt along the South-East cost during the afternoon period. Hazy conditions are expected in the inland areas during the forecast period, NiMet stated. 燬ubsequently, Pilots flying over the Nigerian airspace between December 2014 and March 2015 have been warned by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to be wary of harmattan haze. 揟his warning is important as Harmattan is known to pose an obvious threat to aircraft particularly in areas of challenging terrains due to low visibility, the agency said in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Fan Ndubuoke. Arik Air, one of the major users of the busy 燦namdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja The alert is in line with the Seasonal Rainfall Prediction issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on the cessation of rainy season in 2014. 揟he Harmattan is a dry and dusty wind that blows southwards from the Sahara across the country between the end of November and March, the following year. 揙n its passage over the desert, it picks up large amount of fine dust particles (0.5 to 10 micrometers) which are transported hundreds of kilometres over the south. 揟he effect of the dust and sand stirred by the wind is known as Harmattan Dust Haze, NCAA said. In addition, the consequence of the Harmattan is a heavy fog that causes air to ground visibility to be considerably reduced. 揂erodrome visibility may fall below the prescribed minima and in severe conditions; dust haze can blot out runways, the markers and airfield lightings over wide areas. 揟his makes visual navigation extremely difficult or impossible. Resultantly, where visibility falls below the prescribed weather minima, flight operations are likely to be delayed, diverted or outrightly cancelled, the agency said. NCAA called on all Pilots to obtain adequate departure, en route and destination weather information and briefing from NIMET prior to flight operations at all the airports. 揚ilots are similarly advised to exercise maximum restraint when strong surface wind, fog or harmattan haze is observed or forecast. All concerned are required to ensure compliance with this Circular, NCAA said www.elombah.com |
