What do you know about the Nigerian Army? As at 1969 we had three divisions: 1 Division - Col. Muhammed Shuwa, 2 Division - Col. Ibrahim Haruna and 3 Marine Commando - Col. Benjamin Adekunle. On May 12, they were replaced. I know your confusion - 82 Division in Enugu.
Ibrahim Babangida as at this period was a Major and GOC of 82 Battalion. When he was shot, his assistant, Maj. Mamman Vatsa took over. Muhammadu Buhari was a Captain and GOC of 2 Battalion.

Go back to your history book. During the war TY Danjuma never commanded the 1 Division or any division. In May 1969 when there was change the headship of the divisions, 1 Division moved from Col. Shuwa to Col. Bissalla. 2 Division moved from Col. Haruna to Col. Jallo. 3 Division moved from Col. Adekunle to Col. Obasanjo.
The commander of any military formation is a General Officer Commanding (GOC), whether it a division, a brigade or a battalion.
