On Wednesday in Kano, president Jonathan promised the people that he would completely eradicate Polio in the course of this year, 2015. Last night I spotted a pdp web advert that claims Polio has been eradicated under his government?

The president said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) would declare Nigeria polio-free this year, following the concerted effort of his administration to eradicate the deadly disease which had crippled a lot of young children in the country, especially in the north.

Recounting how Nigeria’s war against polio began, he said, “And as I am telling you now, in 2014 the WHO declared India free of polio and they declared Bangladesh free of polio. We would have been declared last year but because of our challenges. But let me reassure you that, insha Allah, WHO will declare Nigeria polio-free this year.”

Was polio eradicated on Thursday or Friday, or does the President not know that his campaign is misinforming the public?

Key facts

Polio (poliomyelitis) mainly affects children under 5 years of age.
One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis. Among those paralysed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilized.
Polio cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an
estimated 350 000 cases then, to 416 reported cases in 2013. The reduction is the result of the global effort to eradicate the disease.
In 2014, only 3 countries (Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan) remain polio-endemic, down from more than 125 in 1988.
As long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in as many as 200 000 new cases every year, within 10 years, all over the world.
In most countries, the global effort has expanded capacities to tackle other infectious diseases by building effective surveillance and immunization systems.

I don't see why you guys condemning Mr President on every issue cannot weigh your criticisms on the 'Balance of what is truth or not' Nigeria is actually polio free and that's why the Fed Ministry of Health can boast of it by publicly calling for anybody that knows of anyone suffering from polio to report such and earn N25k. The normal procedure by WHO is to give a time-frame before declaring Nigeria polio free same as they did for ebola. Please before criticizing make sure you investigate your facts also you can earn N25k by actually providing anyone suffering from polio.

If not for the south, the north would have been half crippled by now.

And for your info, Nigeria has recorded the lowest cases of polio since independence under Jonathan despite the abduction and beheading of international aid workers by boko haram lunatics.

Why is it that polio is still rearing it's head in the north and not the south?

Have you bothered to ask yourself this question?

Muslim leaders and northern politicians urged their people not to take the vaccine claiming it is an Israeli bio weapon designed to kill Muslims.

What concerns the Jews with ignoramus idiotas that will make them provide vaccines to kill the living dead population of the north.

The fact still remains that only the north has themselves to blame for still recording polio cases.

You are the one who misunderstands why I raised this issue. The President's comments were reported in the press, and they are out of sync with his advertising. It is not the APC that caused that to happen. If the president is not on top of his briefs, this is what will happen. Like his comments about MEND, both statements cannot be true. And how well do you think health services are holding up, in the areas he has practically ceded to boko haram?
