It is likely a mental illness triggered by the stressful situation of loosing a friend.

Termed: Illness anxiety disorder or hypochondriac

First if you can, go to a GP and get a good physical exam and blood work to rule out serious medical illness.

Then if cleared medically,

Seek mental proffessional help; for CBT; a form of psycho therapy. A psychiatrist is your best option cause they can prescribe drugs.

I suggest starting an anxiolytic/anti anxiety such as SSRI like paroxtine 20mg qd (once daily) for 4-6weeks then titrate up based on response.

If you dont respond to it, switch to another anti anxiety drug

You did great, the only thing I'll add is for the op to avoid self medication and obtain the right prescription with dosage etc from a psychologist
