During my final year at school, a
colleague was working on a topic related
with blood sugar level in the body. He
approached me and sought permission to
collect my blood sample , I reluctantly
gave in because I don’t like being pierced.

To cut the story short the result was out
and was reading 205mm/dl(fasting).
Meanwhile under normal circumstances,
glucose level is maintained within the
range of 90-120mm/dl in the body.
The other students surprised, asked him to repeat the test after about 2/3 other
people which he obliged. The results from
other tests came out normal(signifying
there was nothing wrong with the
glucometer-measuring instrument) . He
repeated mine and for the second time it read 206mm/dl.

It was a surprise to me cos there was no
symptom known to me that suggested I
could be hyperglycemic at that time. But I
was fond of soft drinks and most of my
meals which is typical of Nigerians mainly consist of carbohydrates.
Most people are ignorant of the fact the
carbohydrates are sugars(my point
exactly). And because we aren’t showing
symptoms we don’t consider occasional
medical check up. So by the time we’re showing symptoms, the condition might
have deteriorated.

Hyperglycemia in itself is not lethal, but it
is a symptom of a serious disease,
diabetes mellitus. Hyperglycemia is not to
be confused with diabetes mellitus. That you’re hyperglycemic at a particular point
in time, does not necessarily mean it will
lead to diabetes mellitus (*if it is well
taken care of).

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic
diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion,
insulin action, or both. The chronic
hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated
with long-term damage, dysfunction, and
failure of various organs, especially the
eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels (American Diabetes Association). Early signs Recognizing early symptoms of
hyperglycemia can help you treat the
condition promptly though symptoms
may not start to be noticeable until even
higher values such as 15-20mmol/l
(approx. 250-300mg/dl)

They include:
Frequent urination
Increased thirst
Blurred vision
Fatigue
Headache

Later signs and symptoms
If it goes untreated, it can cause toxic
acids (ketones) to build up in blood and
urine (ketoacidosis).

Fruity-smelling breath
Nausea and vomiting
Shortness of breath Dry mouth
Weakness
Confusion
Coma
Abdominal pain

#Key still remains maintenance of a
healthy lifestyle, by eating right, exercising
and most importantly a regular medical
check up.

I hope your blood sugar level has being normalized. I went to a marriage ceremony last week saturday and i saw a young man possibly in his late 20s carrying 3 big bottles of pepsi. Only am one drink the three at once. In his mind, he will feel he is enjoying not knowing him life dey go small small. Well i did my part by advising him on the dangers associated with the over-consumption of sugar. Guess what he told me? Everyone is gonna die someday so enjoy life while it last.
