Wounded eagles Nigeria's military decline: Boko Haram is capitalising on the rot at the core of Nigeria's army By Eleanor Whitehead Eleanor Whitehead is a reporter at the Financial Times, focusing on business, policy and development. She has travelled extensively and has a particular interest in sub-Saharan African consumer markets. Her work is also published in Business Day, Forbes and The Independent. In a small hospital in the Diffa region of south-east Niger, a roomful of Nigerian soldiers wait patiently for medical staff to change their bandages. Their bullet wounds seep blood onto the floor of the whitewashed chamber. The air is heavy with the smell of disinfectant.http://gga.org/stories/editions/aif-30-broken-ranks/wounded-eagles#.VMyki7fm37o.twitter |

GEJ has completely destroyed the Nigerian Army for his personal gain. Can't wait for this guy to be booted out so we can get our Country and dignity back. The most likely solution to the insurgency would be a government that delivers, is transparent and performs proper oversight of military spending. |

All this is old history. Get Jonathan out of government and get the old general in. We should defend our military institutions, they are the oldest and most prestigious institutions we have and we should not let some fisheries expert drag the country down into the stream. |

Gbawe2:Why you no get sense like this. Was it GEJ that cut funds of the Airforce or was it him that removed over a hundred Army officers? |
| Re: Wounded Eagles: Nigeria's Military Decline by Nobody: 1:41pm On Jan 31, 2015 |
No10:GEJ's own failure is releasing funds and not ensuring that it is properly spent. Accountability.. He did not start the prblem but he has shown that he can not handle it... That is where the problem comes in for him... |

tbaba1234:You people are underestimating Jonathan's degree of irresponsibility in this matter. He is Commander In Chief, not minister of defence. He actually owns the military in trust for us. The military are not parastatals under him but institutions that work for him on a daily basis and the instruments of his power. It is a mighty failure we have now that you cannot blame on any general, AVM or Admiral. It is not about funds release alone it is about a President seeing himself as a visitor to the office of President since 2011. It is a wrong psychological orientation to being commander in chief that is why generals could run away from 18year old boko haram boys, boko haram could almost run over SSS hq and Chad is now operating in Nigeria and the CIC is not moved. |

No10:Not "over a hundred" officers, more than five hundred flag and command rank officers were pushed out by Obassonjo in 1999.We were all happy at the time but we also opened ourselves to major security risks at the time. Well the bill for that decision (I wouldn't call it a mistake) is due and boy we are paying. |

When people talk about military spending in Nigeria, please be specific. Till 2012 over 90% of Nigeria's military spending was for recurrent expenditures. Paying salaries, retirement benefits, etc was the greater part of the spending. Tell us how much was allocated to procurement by the national assembly. |

No doubt corruption has been a problem in the army for ages, but Jonathan was the person that legitimize it and encouraged it to a state, where the army is now cannibalizing itself! i.e the army is being destroyed from the inside! I have always known that allowing indiscipline and recklessness to continue will always backfire! The present government in its bid to pocket everybody, even the military retired 140 well trained generals with invaluable experience between 2011 and 2013, and planted their lackeys with minimal experience and intelligence. The price of that is the unneccesary deaths amongst rank and files. 140 Military Generals Retired In Two Years Our Special Correspondent — Feb 15, 2014 | 2 Comments With the recent retirement of service chiefs, the number of generals retired from the Nigerian armed forces in the last two years has reached at least 140, LEADERSHIP Weekend’s investigation has shown. From the statistics available to LEADERSHIP Weekend, about 40 major-generals and 52 brigadier-generals were retired from the army, followed by the air force with 25 air vice-marshals and 40 air commodores; in the navy, about 20 rear-admirals and 38 commodores were retired between 2012 and 2014. This was confirmed by a top military officer who sought anonymity. http://leadership.ng/news/345540/140-military-generals-retired-two-years |

atlwireles:Who sends the budget to the national assembly? Who signs it into law? |
| Re: Wounded Eagles: Nigeria's Military Decline by atlwireles: 6:04pm On Jan 31, 2015 |
tbaba1234:The power of the purse remains with the National assembly, unless you people change it. You people have been talking corruption, now tell us how much of the budget, has been set aside for procurement since 1999. |

atlwireles:BH started its activity in 2009, and resurfaced in 2011.. Mr president only started taking procurement seriously in 2014. |

tbaba1234:So the corruption you people complain about stated last year? All the monies you people claim were stolen by the army command, stated just last year? By the way what weapons did the previous COAS use against Boko haram? Before some people, accused him of crimes against northerners? |
