Threaten to boycott polls

Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja

Sixteen out of the twenty six registered political parties on Tuesday endorsed calls for the postponement of the general election slated for the February 14 and 28.

Also five out of  the 14 presidential candidates on Tuesday signed a statement urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  to postpone the elections to a more appropriate date.

The parties are United Democratic Party (UDP), Citizen Peoples Party (CPP), Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), Action Alliance (AA), Peoples Democratic Congress (PDC) (ACPN), Labour Party (LP), (MPPP), United Party of Nigeria (UPN), Alliance for Democracy (AD), (ADC), (ACD) Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Independent Democrat (ID).

The five presidential candidates who endorsed the postponement were Godson Okoye (UDP), Chief Sam Okoye (CPP), Prince C.O Allagoe (PPN), Tunde Anifowose (AA) and Ganiu Galadima (ACPN).

The 16 political parties in a resolution calling for the postponement, said, "Fellow Nigerians, we the concerned leaders of political parties, run up to the 2015 February General Elections, have observed some dangerous trends, which if not checked may negatively and adversely affect our democracy".

The parties hinged their argument for the postponement on security, distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and people deserting their residence for their villages.

They  also threatened to boycott the elections if the opinions were not respected.

The leaders of the 16 parties  called on Federal government to take necessary steps to provide adequate security for Nigerians to go out and collect their PVCs in order to be able to exercise their civic and constitutional duty.

I don't understand this method of arm twisting the electoral body INEC into making a decision they clearly don't want to.

Is the body no longer independent? Why can't everybody just give them the benefit of the doubt when they say they're ready?

Is INEC expected to publish all their strategy through the media just to show they're ready?

The polity as it stands is already red hot calling for a shift in the date is just absurd. Nigerians are used to the norm of doing things @ d last minute.

INEC has said severally that PVCs are ready for collection whether you go forward to collect or not is solely your decision. I really don't understand where all this pressure is coming from.

Nigerians need to free themselves from the mentality of ''my vote won't count'' and step forward to not only collect their PVCs but also to excercise their voting rights otherwise they should shut up and leave INEC the heck alone to do their job.

Nigerians have decided to vote come FEBUHARI 14 . Even if the election is shifted till 3015 these political parties won't get 0.0002% of the total votes. why crying foul if the PDP is not the one behind this?

They can't win a 'street election' because moneyed 'bigwigs' like Atiku and Tinubu would swiftly flood the street with their stolen billions, preventing any other voice from being heard. They have no stolen funds and convoy-riding big men with clout and connections backing them, so to you they are inconsequential and easily dismissed. You're a very scary advert for Nigerian democracy.

Who cares? They can boycott the polls for all we care. No one even knows if they exist.

Jonathan can see defeat starring him straight in the face and is so desperate to ensure elections are not held as scheduled, but any attempt to tamper with the date of the elections will be met with equal measure of resistance from patriotic Nigerians.

FaBuhari 14 it is and Buhari is gonna be my date. PDP's plans are DOA.

And you think that that is a good thing.

Do you actually know the meaning of democracy?

You're ignorant and callous. I'm sure you would 'know if they exist' within 2 seconds had they been backed by big political godfathers and moneybags with looted funds. You don't even realize how you promote the same thievery, greed, corruption and avarice you constantly moan about, by your own mentality.

All these are lepers parties, the election is not meant for them. Beside they are PDP alliances, they have been dragged in the postponement plan, they have been paid. PDP has become so desperate for the shame of losing in the election.

Rumours have been going round that Jonathan is planning to address the nation tomorrow to postpone the elections after the council of state meeting.

Nigerians should watch out.
