Osu caste system is a dying if not already-dead culture.

99% of present-day Igbo youths only heard abt it in social studies class. They have never seen an 'osu' person or the discrimination in practise.

The less we talk about the osu caste system the more it will cease to exist. We shouldn't even enlighten our children about it lest they discriminate against the people they love.

For now, the Osu Caste system remains sacrosanct in Igboland! You must face the reality, it's not a fairy tale! U need enough resources and courage to stand against it! it's for now, a mission impossible!!

Seriously, something has to be done. Although they told us that it has been abolished long time ago but then the practice and the discrimination is still there.

Yes, it has been abolished but the fear of associating with them and the fear of what people will say, I believe is the reason why people still avoid getting in contact with them.

Not necessarily getting in contact with them but marrying them.
Two childhood friends of mine were forced apart a few days to their traditional marriage for the same reason by their uncles and kindred (frankly, I never knew the girl was of Osu decent). No matter how much they tell you it's been abolished, parents still regard it. None of your kinsmen will follow you to your inlaws place if they realise your inlaws belong to the osu caste, unless you're one as well.

All these thesis writers will write any rubbish to earn their PhD.

Osu caste system is dead and should be allowed to rest. Enough of flogging this issue. Christianity has stopped the act.

Today We have people bear Nwosu, osunkwo, osueke, etc Ngozi Nwosu, Ashley Nwosu etc are known nollywood actors bearing osu name. Did any of them tell u He is being persecuted?

Enough of these paper Rubbish.

I grew up reading and hearing about osu caste system on paper and preaching about it in church But have not seen any victimized, so Why wake a dead issue?

I don't believe all this about the Osufrom Christian sources. I've read from some typical traditional Igbo sources and they speak of Osu as sacred, respected temple attendants

No need to endear traditional religion to Igbos. They have gone past that era.

The discrimination is too much especially when it comes to the issues of marriage. I wish something will be done to change such situations. Because the victims lives with the stigma of rejection all through their life. It's disheartening to be in a relationship for years only to realise that the guy or the girl is an OSU when it's time to take the relationship to another level.

The practice of osu can never be abolished in the east,no matter your level of education or civilization this system is an age longed tradition, that's why most of them marries outside the east, besides its a very dicey discussion in the east cos you may not know who is an osu thereby risking your life as the person you are discussing with might be which may led to him or her harming u out of frustration, also I heard that there are signs of knowing one. As long as culture continues to exist the discrimination continues, but the good thing about them is that most of are succesful people today.

What they told you is akin to dressing up your battered domestic househelp nicely whenever her family pays you a visit that has been announced.

Your source is hiding the truth from you.Did your source also tell you that they are usually sacrificed for whatever reasons they deem necessary?

How is it that nearly every 'Osu' thread in the history of NL makes front page? This is ridiculous.

Which part if igboland is ur osu practiced?

In my part. It is a crime to call one osu. it has been eradicated. Infact the Catholic church will sanction any parent that deny their children marriage over osu issue.

The church has done a lot in that regards, today people proudly bears Nwosu surname ie child of osu.

Yeah Osu system has bin abolished nd dey even allow dem nw to attend dier town nd village meetings unlike b4. Bt wen its cum to marriage its a no no nd its so annoyin. Igbos re always careful wen gettin married dey must investigate if d oda party is Osu or Ume, if d person has madness or one kind of sickness nd disease in dier family.Nd if d party is guilty of any, dat wedding is called off.

Dying culture... Yes, but not dying really.
Dead Culture... Not at all. it's still pretty much alive in some part of Igbo Land.
I have not seen OSU before, but the practice and discrimination is still very much alive in my t :own...

If the osu are people dedicated to the gods but yet very ill treated, it means the Igbo do not regard their gods.

Imagine! Treating foreigners who have lived with you over many generations like an outcast up till date. The irony of it is that they are here in foreign land claiming governorship position.

It is high time for you guys to disassociate yourselves from this primitive customs and traditions - Right to life, right to personal liberty and right to dignity of human labour are sancrosanct.

God bless Nigeria.
