Nigerian Millitary Rule in Perspective- Soldiers of Fortune The War on Narcotics The FMG also announced a harsh crackdown on drug dealing. It enacted Decree 20 which prescribed the death penalty for convicted drug dealers. The Decree had retroactive effect. Three convicted drug dealers named Lawal Olujope, Bartholomew Owoh and Bernard Ogedengbe were sentenced to death and executed by firing squad on April 14, 1985. The executions caused much soul searching and made the FMG seem harsh for approving the execution of drug dealers who committed offences before the death penalty became applicable to their offence. Undeterred, a few weeks later the SMC approved the execution of three more drug dealers, including Mrs. Gladys Iyamah, a mother of two paraplegic children. She was to be the first woman in Nigerian history to be executed by a firing squad. Conscious of the brutality of publicly executing a woman, the FMG authorised her execution in private at the Kirikiri maximum security prison in Lagos. However the sentence was never carried out. |

Death sentence for drug mules: The Buhari regime is also notorious for sentencing to death those convicted of drug trafficking with Decree 20. However, nothing caused more uproar than the retroactive application of the laws even though this has been disputed. Bartholomew Owoh, Bernard Ogedengbe and Lawal Ojulope were made to face the firing squad. Some argue that Owoh was the only one arrested BEFORE the promulgation of the decree. In April 1985, six Nigerians were convicted by a Special Military Tribunal headed by Justice Adebayo Adesalu and condemned to death for drug trafficking: Mrs. Sidikatu Tairi, Miss Sola Oguntayo, Oladele Omosebi, Lasunkanmi Awolola, Jimi Adebayo and Gladys Iyamah. I remember clearly one of the women fainting upon hearing the death sentence and prison officials had to come to her rescue. Gladys Iyamah, locked up at the Federal Maximum Security Prisons in Kirikiri, Lagos, was a crippled mother of two and was the first woman in the history of Nigeria to be sentenced to death. The Federal Military Government knew the implication of executing a paralysed mother of two and the sentence was secretly approved. But thankfully, it was never carried out. |

Buhary is only wasting his time and the time of his followers, greater disappointment is waiting for them all in march. 1st run - 2003 - FAILED 2nd run - 2007 - FAILED 3rd run - 2011 - FAILED 4th run - 2015 - International FAILURE. I appeal to the Nigerian youth not to waste their votes on a serial FAILURE. A failure remains a failure irrespective of the branding of CHANGE. Vote Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for greater Nigeria. Shalom!
