Name distinction among sexes in Igboland is usually more prominent in Northern Igboland and less distinct in Southern Igboland. Names tend to be unisex in southern Igboland with less gender distinctions than in Northern Igboland. I grew up knowing 'Ebele'/'Ebere' to be a distinctively female name within my area until I moved to Owerri and met a male neighbour bearing 'Ebere' as name. It was a shock for me though.

Lol. Going by the meaning of Igbo names,i feel they should be Unisex. I have seen many women bearing Ifeanyi/Iheanyi,just as i have seen Guys bearing Ogechi and Chinenye.
I checked the igbo column in a slave record and i saw numerous Females with Male names. And Males bearing what will would call Feminine names today.

Yea. Names tend to be unisex when you move further south in Igboland. Hardly would 'typical' male names be borne by females and vice versa in Anambra/Enugu/Ebonyi, maybe Anioma axis. Majority of the slaves were from Igbo south, and that explains the unisex nature of the names you read. That's ok. I was only pointing out differences in naming conventions and wasn't saying that one was better than the other.
