01 Mar 2015 President Goodluck Jonathan recently made a last-ditch effort to woo South-west voters through the traditional rulers. Ademola Adeyemo reports In what political observers have described as an attempt to be in control of his own destiny, President Goodluck Jonathan recently visited the South-west geopolitical zone in continuation of his consultations with stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, ahead of the general election. It was learnt that the president’s latest move was informed by reports that some of his foot soldiers in the South-west were not doing enough to sell his candidacy and mobilise people for his re-election bid. Jolted by this negative report, Jonathan was said to have decided to seize the opportunity of the election postponement to try to bridge the political gap by embarking on solo consultations. According to a source, some close political leaders had informed Jonathan that for him to win March 28 poll, he needs to win the South-west. The zone has the second highest number of voters in the country, after the North-West, where the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, hails from. Marginalisation Fears Confronted with the electoral reality and complaints about marginalisation, Jonathan embarked on a tour of Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states, believed to be the stronghold of the opposition, to solicit support, especially in the face of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s exit from Peoples Democratic Party. The president was said to be confronted with the statistics, which showed a seeming marginalisation of the South-west. The president is from South-south, the vice president is from North-west, Senate President is from North-central, Deputy Senate President is from South-east, Speaker of the House of Representatives comes from North-west, Deputy Speaker is from South-east, Chief Justice of Nigeria is from North-east, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is from South-east. The president’s consultation commenced in Lagos, where he met with different stakeholders at the State House, Marina. However, PDP officials in the region were largely left out of the consultations. Among the groups he consulted with is the Yoruba Council of Elders. The council is led by General Adeyinka Adebayo, who is the father of the APC chieftain and former governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo. The elders were said to have raised the issue of the political marginalisation of the South-west with the president, who promised to reverse the situation if re-elected Read full article here: http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/jonathan-s-final-push-for-south-west/203009/ |

kheart:Its the selfish ones enriching from Jonathan that are betraying the region.By God's grace, when Jonathan leaves the scene come may 29 and buhari starts his reign, these arse licking GEJ sycophants from the east would depart the system, their disgusting betrayal would come to the open and a new breed of critical thinking Igbo politicians would emerge. It may take some time because the damage done has been monumental, but with the likes of okorocha, obiano (who i dont see alligning with the pdp after may 29),and other forward thinking Ibo politicians with vision to reassert the diminishing status of the Ibos in Nigerian body polity, the Ibos wud eventually be a force again. |

Irony is when someone who banned NANS and didn't build a single school in his 20 months in office, criticises GEJ who built 9 universities in 20 months." I can name 9 Universities and 50 Almajiri schools President Jonathan built in his first 20 months in office. I will offer ₦10,000 to any Buhari supporter who can name just one school General Buhari built in his 20 months as a military dictator. I can name hundreds of scholarships GEJ gave students in his 1st 20 months. I offer ₦5,000 to Buhari fans to name a scholarship he gave. I can name many critics Buhari jailed and banned in his 20 months in power. I offer ₦5k to Buhari fans to name a critic in jail under GEJ. I can name 10 female ministers that President Goodluck Jonathan appointed in his first 20 months in office. I offer ₦10,000 to anyone who can name one woman Gen Buhari appointed as a minister during his 20 months as Nigeria's military dictator. Fuel was increased, we protested and the price was reduced. What happened to those who protested against the Lekki Toll Gate? They were beaten by the ‘change agents.’ Was the toll reduced? When we see change, we know one. A 73 year old unrepentant bigoted coupist is not the change we need. Nigeria is presently transforming for the better, Buhari and his vicious followers should keep their change! |

cross50:We SW Buhari supporters will not only keep our Change, but we are also keeping our votes from the Clueless One, in effect terminating his second term ambition -- since even he knows his ambition will remain but a mirage without our votes. Now Choke on that! |

...Are you better off now than you were 6 years ago before President Jonathan was sworn in as president after the death of President Umaru Yaradua? Are Nigerians living a higher quality of life now than before because they have access to better, good paying jobs, better healthcare, better education and infrastructure, power or electricity that has removed the need to invest in diesel generators? What is your perception of corruption in the country? Follow links in my signature, NL is blocking any information that does not or may not favour the current government.
