Hello NLers

Anyone working in Saudi Arabia?? How is life as a female and christian.

I decided to take a break from my studies next year for personal reasons that I cannot share. I decided to use my SA passport to my advantage as they only want SA, British, US, Ausralian, Canadian citizens.
I did one month TESOL course and then applied for English teaching jobs. To my suprise, I got responses.

They pay anything from $3000 - $6000 per month depending on experience and $6500 - $9000 when you possess Phd or Masters in English.
Accomodation is free, Medical insurance and transport is also provided and 30 days paid leave and round trip ticket to home country once per year.

I am skeptical to accept because of hearsay.

Are stories sansationalised or is Saudi Arabia really bad for a woman?

How is life on the ground in Saudi Arabia?
Anyone teaching in Saudi Arabia??

Like someone said, just mind your business once you get there! I'm an atheist and lived there for 2 years, precisely in Dhahran. There are many Christians there BUT just mind your business and don't discuss religion with anybody! They respect people who speak very good English especially with American accent, so I believe you'll be respected. Tabuk is damn dry! YouTube will be your daily companion after work lol! They've blocked most Christian websites and also ALL porn sites! so NO self-servicing!
Cost of living is very low and I strongly believe you'll enjoy your stay there....my regards to the new King o! Cheers!

Dear beloved.

One down and 11 more to go. cheesy cheesy cheesy
Its been a month now since I arrived in Saudi Arabia. Not easy ooo.
Unfortunately I was placed in a city in the Middle of Saudi Arabia called Hail. The city has hard core Muslims who don't compromise.

There is a lot of adjusting that I had to do, which I am still doing on a daily basis e.g. :
1. Dressing - In this extremely hot weather a woman is still expected to were an Abaya + Niqqab ( to always cover your face when you are in public places ).
The authorities don't even want to see your forearm undecided undecided

2. Weather - It is extremely hot and I am told that it gets worst in June- August, and unfortunately I am expected to work during summer holidays.

3. Everything and anything is gender classified e.g. Banks for woman only, floors inside malls for woman only, eating areas at a restaurant for woman only undecided undecided undecided

There are massive things I really had to adjust to.

Pheeeeewwww, ALL I CAN SAY IS WHAT A STRANGE PLACE cheesy cheesy cheesy Their money is good is you are willing to live a strange life for it.

Masonkz and gcfrcom thanks for you best wishes. I am safely in Saudi Arabia.

sorry TO ONLY respond now. Yes I have heard of maids being maltreated. Apparently it always starts from Oga of the house wanting to taste something different ( black or no Arabic coochie ) and when the maid resists, their all breaks loose.

Fortunately I am over qualified for the Maid position, but Maids here really need your prayers, talkless of woman. From a distance I can just see unhappiness in their eyes sad sad

Thanks for you precise response. I was eventually placed in Hail. But I gather Tabuk and Hail have almost the same culture with very hard core Muslims.
Yes, thankfully there is a sizable number of expats, in this city, so we all live in expat compounds which are a secluded from Saudi communities, though there are some expats who choose to have private accomodation.

As for English UNFORTUNATELY people here seems to be resisting English. They speak very English and if you cannot speak a little Arabic, it can be a nightmare even to get simple things like Bank services.

As for Christian websites, I was amused that I can get to a lot of Cathoic websites and I have even tuned into one of Christian channel on their cable TV. cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

As for YOUTUBE, that is the truth, I have now discovered Kansiime Anne ( Ugandan Commedianne ) who has been keeping me company.

When I arrived in Saudi Arabia, I got to stay in Riyadh for one week, boy, it was so good. When I got here in Hail, it was real culture shock. Riyadh and Hail people are so different, as well as the culture and dressing is a little relaxed in Riyadh.

But thanks a lot, I will keep on updating this page. wink wink wink wink

Dear, I was just generalising. Though money for all of us who are here is way much better than country of origin. tongue tongue tongue

The sad part is your passport determines how well you get paid. Americans are the kings, then UK,Canada, Australia, SA.
Egypt, Jordan, India, Sudanese teachers are the least paid.

Do you know where I can buy an American passport? grin grin

Everyone is paid well but the good pay skipped me tongue

Good pay usually goes with high cost of living.
How expensive is life there ( NOT crowded ten to a room, eating fufu for every meal!)

Cost of living is really low. Accommodation is free or paid by the employer. Fairly good estates/compounds meant for expats only.In our case we don't share, you get the whole house with min 2 bedrooms or the whole flat with min 1 bedroom if you are not married with kitchen and bathroom and living room and some dining room.
Transport is provided to and from work and shopping.
Life is fairly cheap here. One can save 90% of ones salary if you are wiser.

Re: Anyone Working In Saudi Arabia by Nobody: 12:33pm On May 03, 2015
Happy you're adapting. That's the essence of living outside one's country - exposure to different cultures! Where I worked in Dhahran, they usually double our salaries during summer (June to August) so as to encourage us not to go on vacation wink Keep saving!

I'm not surprised, I knew of someone that earned $11,000! Pay is determined mostly by experience and nationality. When I was there we worked from Saturday to Wednesday; Thursday was weekend while Friday was the day of rest. They recently changed it to increase their business days with other countries.

@ op

Cpngratulations on your job. Pay looks nice in addition to juicy incentives.
However as you alluded there is no social life. What's all that money without true freedom? Like living in the 12th century. Does not also look like where one can raise family.
Don't get me wrong it may not be my cup of tea I know millions move there en mass even as we speak.

@ coohamid, I am also new here. Perhaps in about one year I will have a bit of knowledge with regards to industries, companies etc.

So at this stage I will lying if I say I have knowledge to help you. smiley smiley
But I would advice you to search companies that you are targetting websites, rather than agencies. Too many scams. smiley smiley
