I was born into a christian home, but became an atheist in 2009 (ironically, that happened after I decided to read the whole Bible). Anyway, I have done a good job of hiding my religious stance from my family members. They know I don't go to church regularly, but don't know I am an atheist. There is just something about telling people you are an atheist...They starting looking at you like you are evil or something.


So, to all the athiests in the house...Do your family members know you don't believe in the "man in the sky" story? And if they do, how do they react towards you?

Athiest here based in london. Best to keep it to myself coz if some of my folks in nigeria foundout that am an athiest they won't take it easy with me. They will think there's something wrong with me like mental issues or am a witch or some silly stuff like that

The irony of them thinking that there is something wrong with you or that you are a 'witch' would, no doubt, be lost on them.

Yea. I understand. That's why I also keep it to myself. People here are very religious (well, it doesn't mean they are "good" people), and hearing someone doesn't believe in God automatically means to them that he is a devil worshiper.

Yes, my family members are well enlightened, each of us differs in what we find convincing and or unconvincing.

having beliefs that differ from those around you can only be an issue among backward minded semi educated people.

Fear wont let them

My dad is so intelligent with life views and perceptions,Nigeria churches made him turned agnostic,my mum and sis are usher and choir respectively...until I turned atheist....mom still frowns at me but my dad knows better.
