Google gave Android Lollipop fans something to lick their lips about Monday — an update of its popular operating system with some nifty additions.

Android 5.1 includes the usual stability and performance improvements as well as new features like support for multiple SIM cards, device protection and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones.

“Whether you want to share your phone with a family member or better manage your mobile costs, Android Lollipop 5.1 now lets you use more than one SIM card on a device with multiple SIM slots,” Google Android Platform vice-president Dave Burke wrote in a blog post.

“We hope you enjoy these tasty additions to Android Lollipop as you get more out of your Android phone and tablet.”

The update also includes device protection so when a user loses their phone, or it is stolen, it will remain locked until he or she signs in with his or her Google account — even if someone else were to reset the device to factory settings. The feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets running Android 5.1 as well as on Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

The new version of Lollipop offers high definition voice calling between compatible Android 5.1 devices as well as the ability to join Wi-Fi networks.
