If only our country will invest heavily and adequately on our universities. The universities should be the hub of scientific, industrial, political innovations in nigeria, when I was in America, the government took its political, economic advisers from the universities, also weapons and other technical advancement oozed and emitted majorly from the universities.

There are issues with this approach (I mean the focus of the thread, not your post per se) that might not be patently obvious on the surface.......

But just think a little deeper, and you'll realise it's a sham in some ways, schemes to generate noise and interest and maybe financial reward or maybe just part of our psyche that if it doesn't make noise, it's not progress. We sacrifice genuine progress on the alter of popularity.

Development does not come by developing cars and airplanes and rockets (yeah, some Nigerian students once built rockets). Technological development comes in bits and pieces.

Just focus on developing
* a braking system more efficient than Toyota,
* A gear box better than honda's ,
* A chasis that gives more balance than benz.
* A metallic alloy that's very light but stronger than most used in developing cars

Just focus on one thing at a time that might not give you a 'name' but will ensure you contribute your quota to tech advancement.

I remember a student back then in my uni who built a car that could run on water, I felt that was the most foolish thing ever, sham of the highest order. NOBODY INVENTS A CAR THAT CAN RUN ON WATER, what you can do in all probability is to build AN ENGINE that can run on water, leave others to fashion out its practical application and focus on your expertise.

I remember a young girl in the US who discovered a 3D carbon form that could store charge more than most materials. That's technology - it is left for Nokia, Apple and Ford (or whoever is interested) to figure how they can use it in their cars, phone and other devices.

So the reason why this 'big achievements' never amount to anything eventually is not because of government 'insensitivity' but because the intentions of the inventors were not always altruistic

Why all these rushy rushy technology. The army made an armour something (vehicle or so) another school also did a car too. We should be planning on doing mass production of these shit yes I call them shit but it is okay by once it is made in NGR. I know Satanist and jonathanians will clame this as trophy but before you do tell your JESUS to ban all forms of vehicular importation so that these product can grow especially tokunbo. We need to start buying made in Nigeria even if the product is substandard atleast we have no choice and manufacturer can go and improve. Sorry for not been coheret just want to say a lot at a time

the exact thing happens in our politics. one party usurp the other, instead of continuing on what your predecessor has acheived, they scrap d whole program n begin afresh.

First it was ‘Tuke Tuke’, a car built by students of the University of Benin in May 2014. A car that, according to the Media Manager of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, Mr Precious Okolobo, passed international technical evaluation in Rotterdam, Netherland.

The car was to race at the 2014 Shell Eco-Marathon in Netherlands along with cars from 25 mostly advanced countries. It was a major feat in automotive technology innovation for Nigeria.

2015 ABUCAR from Ahmadu Bello University Students

From ‘Tuke Tuke’, students from the Mechanical Engineering department of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, has taken it a step further to manufactured two eco-friendly energy efficient cars.

This news is old now.

At least, they've improved and are currently building another.

Eco tuketuke was the first, eco cruise the second, the third still in phase... and here's the picture of eco cruise...

Seriously students of foreign universities will laugh at uniben students for showcasing such. While these kids need to be encouraged they should also try to perfect their craft before rushing to showcase their non achievement to the world. This consists of welded scrap metals and bicycle tyres. Wonder what engine it runs on. Probably okada engine. The work above can be done by any combination of apprentice mechanics, panel beaters and electricians.

Instead our universities should be encouraged and funded to design better things. They should move forward and not drag us back to the era of carriages.

These guys aren't even there yet. The frame is so unsafe and too small.

Kudos for attempting this kind of project but i am a strong believer that for such attempts, a PROTOTYPE MODEL should be done and completed to see how these parts fit together before even fabricating any member.

I am not impressed.

E be like say we they think similar .

Please check my post above you https://www.nairaland.com/2199961/nigerian-university-students-builds-car/1#31700444

Cos my question is, apart from wielding metal together, what have they achieved really as far as improving technology is concerned. Are they really building on old achievements ?

Or is it just about appearing on the pages of newspaper - when will a Nigerian develop something as simple as efficient seatbelt technology or safer car-lock technology, when When are we going to embrace technology for technology sake alone ?

This project would have made sense had it been done by secondary school students whose goal is to practicalise what they have been thought, but at the University level, you should be concerned about contributing to the body of knowledge
