babestella: It is a very long story, if we are to really do justice to it. To be honest, reading a few books, from different angles (as each author will be a bit biased, one way or another) and then sifting the truth and summarising, will give you a better perspective of that war. But trust me, it started from perceived injustice by the Igbos, (since the british handed over the country to the Northerners, who were not wise enough to understand that "Fairness and Justice" are required to prosper a nation)... which made them think, WRONGLY THOUGH, that the solution is to wipe-out the Norther political hegemony from the nation (Igbo-Ironsi First Nigerian Military Coup!), what followed was a short period of Igbo domination of the nation in all spheres, Civil Service, Military, Political, e.t.c This opened the eye of the Northerner to the use of military for coups! The Northerners retaliated in a counter-coup and also tried to wipe-out Igbo Political/military leaders. They did not stop there as there was "deep-sited" animosity for Igbos, resulting from the first coup (Recall that Northerners have far less educated leaders amongst them, compared to the other Ethnics in Nigeria, killing them off in one fell sweep was really a game changer!). They also murdered Igbo-Civilians in the North, just like happened recently. Based on the above, Ojukwu felt the best option was to pull out of Nigeria and form Baifra but the devil is in the details, .....bearing in mind that crude Oil has just started selling in commercial Quantities at Oloibiri and Ojukwu felt, Biafra will own all the oil receipts, not minding that is was in the south-South (Though he "forcefully conquered" this region ...current Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Cross River and Akwa Ibom as the was progressed). Ojukwu knew the federal govt will never allow him to annex the Crude Oil meant for the whole country, to his own Biafra alone (even that thought alone is a reflection of the greed of the Igbos!) but Ojukwu's calculation was that the Northerners who are his principal enemies, acnnot fight wars on TWO FRONTS. So, he sought to incite the Yorubas to secede as well. Now, the Yorubas were also having a rough deal from the Northern dominated military Govt but secession was a whole new game. You need preparation, strategic arms storage and supply, friends in the international community, arms supply guarantee, food security, e.t.c. The Yorubas knew they were not "ready" for a war, based on the indices l mentioned above..... and told Ojukwu so. Ojukwu, out of self belief and probably with an eye on the "Prize" (oil) still went ahead to declare the war. His calculation was that he could force the Yorubas into a "suicidal secession" (at that point in time) by bombing the South West!...which he did repeatedly, conquering as far as Oore town in Ondo State.... with Yorubas just warning his to desist. The rest is history. I will still urge you to read books on the War, from all sides of the divide (Igbos, Hausas, Yorubas) to get an all-round perspective of the war, its origins, the intrigues and how it ended. ozoigbondu:The house in question was built by the British colonial master and was the residence of the governor of the northern region. Sir Ahmad Bello was the premier of the region from 1st October 1960 and was living there "officially" up to the time he was assassinated by Major Chukwuma Nzeugo Kaduna. It was like d Aso Rock Villa of that time north wise. Get it? 1 Like |

The pertinent question here which I believe we all should ask, process and understand is; "what were the events that led to the first coup"? This is very important because that would had saved us from this hell hole we've found ourselves. We always tend to look at the result of the first coup and not the cause, so I think we should focus on the cause and then begin to build a better Nigeria based on the lessons learnt from the cause and not the result. If we always tend to learn from the result we will not learn to avoid the cause which unfortunately is what we are either deliberately or inadvertently playing out today. |

lastpage:dishonesty with facts can be extremely dangerous...i know you have one or two things against igbos from the way you write but never twist facts to suit your mindset.. First there was nothin like south south then as what existed then around where eastern, western, midwestern and northern regions. Delta and Edo were part of the Midwestern region and not part of the then eastern region that made up the defunct Biafra. 1 Like |
