There are wicked people everywhere, that a few families treat widows poorly in the South east does not make it a South east thing. My Mom is a widow and no one treats her badly, she gets all the respect and pampering she can get.
Aisha Buhari was only being tribalistic. Imagine the reaction of PEJ had said that.
If she stops the ''suffering'' of widows in the South east, what about other parts of Nigeria? No such thing happens in those places?

Please show us the statistics that says so and the method they used for the research, I have not seen a single Igbo widow that was "suffered" by her inlaws, though I don't doubt that one or two such cases might exist. Remember the speech wasn't even made in the South east, we would have said it was meant for the local audience.

As an Igboman, I am interested on issues that also include: Erosion control, Large-scale farming, protecting Albinos, punishment for ritual killings, child trafficking, fighting selling of substandard products, support for SMEs, skill acquisition trainings, industrialization, setting up factories and plants, refineries, mining, civic centres, security, housing, etc.

How about little girls being used as suicide bombers? How about lack of girl child education and other female related problems in the north?

Awka — About 5000 women of Igbo origin met in Awka, Anambra State capital, where emotion was let loose as they decried a plethora of harmful practices perpetrated against women in Igbo land.

The women at the end of what became a rally of sorts attended by Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, his wife, Ebele, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 9, Usman Gwary, was represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Finham Adeoye, sought the passage of a Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) bill by the Senate. The bill had passed its first and second readings and referred to Senate Committee on Judiciary on Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative work.

The President of the women also known as Umuada Igbo (Igbo Daughters) Dr. Kate Ezeofor, said the group was planning advocacy visits, rallies and meetings to the communities, villages and towns to educate their members on their inheritance rights.

Ezeofor said grassroots mobilization for community sensitization made women to deliberate on family planning, reproductive health and rights and its legal implications.

In his remarks, Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, commended Umuada Igbo for the commitment in pursuit of their rights.

The IPAS Nigeria country Director, Dr. Nihinlola Mabogunje, was represented by Princess Nnenna Emele, the Lady incharge of IPAS- Nigeria in the South East.

Others who spoke on violent practices against women yesterday were former commissioner for education, Dr. Uju Okeke, who represented Anambra's First lady, Chief Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano.

The former commissioner for women's affairs in the state, Lady Henrietta Agbata, who is state coordinator, Umuada Igbo commended the women for the unity and IPAS-Nigeria for its commitment on women related issues.

The said discriminatory customary law is void as it conflicts with Section 42(1) and (2) of the Constitution. In the light of all that I have been saying, the appeal is dismissed. Other justices that also concurred to the verdict were Justices Walter Samuel Onnoghen, Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, Kumai Bayang Aka’ahs and  John Inyang Okoro.

In another case on the same subject, the apex court, held that Nigerian customs which disinherit women are repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience and should therefore not be allowed to stand. Thus, the court, declared as repulsive the custom of the Awka people in Anambra State which allows married women to be disinherited upon the death of their husband because they could not produce a male child for the late husband.
