Again lying get's a Nigerian in trouble when telling the truth would have passed him through.

You said that he had booked a hotel for buisness, if this is true.
Then he should have told UKBA that he had relations in UK. but had booked a hotel for buisness meetings and was not seeing them.

It's so simple but people would rather lie than tell the truth.
Then you blame UKBA for your failings.

My brother all blessings upon you.

I really don't understand Nigerians. The most simple question and the guy still goes to lie. They think the rest of the world works like lawless Nigeria where anything goes. Lying or giving incorrect information to an official is a crime. Period

This is a very sketchy story.

Not to say that British immigration cannot be silly but this story is too vague.

Why lie? Just answer honestly, at least if you are deported for telling the truth then you can say that you were mistreated. When you lie you give them a reason to be suspicious.

Humans tends to react in a funny manner when we fear or are anxious of something, most times we cant stand/look into the eyes of a law enforcement agent when we are guilty..
1. Maybe he acted anxious, with fear or was avoided eye contact of the immigration officer that was attending to him...
2. he lied and they found out,
3. The business meeting he claimed to be attending might not sound so convincing to make them take the risk of allowing him in..

In the immigration person thinking,
Why is he anxious? I don't know
Why did he lie? Maybe he has negative intention and don't want people to know his accomplice or don't want to have a tie to anyone in the country...
Believe me if I was the one behind the counter I will do exactly the same.. Yes send him back, the risk of him entering the country is not worth taking...

Next time.....
1. Look confident,
2. Why are you coming in? I have a meeting with a friend/business partner and do a short holiday
3. Do you know anyone here? Yes a relative but didn't inform her I was coming because I don't want to visit her.. or delete any trace to the country.. Phone numbers, dialed calls and the likes

Good advice.

The UK is becoming more strict about who they let in...especially with the rise of right wing parties like UKIP...who in the unlikely event they win could make things much tighter for everyone....hence the Conservatives showing the people they mean business on immigration.

This is one of the ill treatments meted out to a Nigerian recently in the UK.

My friend was traveling to the UK to meet a friend of his for some important discussions. His wife's younger sister stays in London and was not aware of his arrival as he wanted to stay in the hotel throughout his visit without any disturbance.

On arriving London, Immigration officers asked him if he knew anyone in London, to which he said no. In what looked like a drama, they took his phone from him and one of the officers went to an office, searched through the phone, found a London Number and called it. My guy's sister-in-law picked and answered all the questions they posed thinking the sister's husband was in trouble.

Like another drama, mu guy found himself in a room, and thereafter ushered to a waiting plane going to Lagos.

This is absolutely astonishing!

A simple truth would have saved him all that...he's lucky his phone was collected from him to help him confirm. He could have been put on the next available plane simply because of that...how did he get a visa if you knew no one going by the purpose of his visit?

He should consider himself lucky...he thinks UK is his father's backyard?

@ "everyone lies". You need to change the kind of people you associate with. There's way more to life than you think.

Its quite unfortunate that some Nigerians think like this. The truth wouldn't have hurt him one bit but he choose to give an unnecessary lie. These kind of people are the major problems of Nigeria, thinking you can just get away with breaking the law or being dishonest. In saner climes, people are held by their words and integrity, honesty and reliability go a long way. In Europe, if you have an appointment at 12:00pm and get there 12:05pm, no one will attend to you and you'll be regarded as unreliable. But alas, we are proud to boast about "African time" and make it seem like it is an achievement to be unreliable.

And that's where we are today, a nation that has moved nowhere after 54years. Our indicipline and non chalance has cost us our prestige and rendered us static, if not backward in our "perceived" development.

The youths have been misled to believe what is wrong is right and vise versa. I believe its time we start being real to ourselves.

You sure deserve 1 million likes and a french kiss!!!!!

This sums it all up!! There's no point trying to be quaint, diplomatic or modest about it!!!
Nigeria is a pit, a stinking, graveyard filled with distorted people who praise mediocrity and ridicule integrity and humility.
Choke on this GEJ!!!!

There's more to this story.
You can claim you know no one in "London" even if you have a UK number on your phone. UK is not London alone. And in UK, people relocate at the shortest possible time.
Re: He Was Deported On Arriving UK. by skylarr: 11:18am On Mar 24, 2015
Why did he lie in the first place? Honesty is the best policy . Except , of course he has ulterior motives of being in that country. This is the rot we find ourselves in in this country. Vices have become virtues and to think some people feel that the guy was wrongly treated is shocking. I feel no ounce of pity for him cos he got what he deserved. That'll teach him to always tell the truth.

There is certainly more to this story than the you or your friend is telling us. If what you have narrated is the complete story, then I would say the UKBA guys were wrong.

Was he given a chance to explain why he claimed he knew no one?... He had a hotel booked, he was in the country for business meeting (probably in a town out of London), he had no intentions of seeing his in-law and didn't even think it fit to inform her. He probably didnt even know if she was resident in London or in another town. If I were the man and was casually asked by the immigration guys, I would likely have just given a similar casual answer since my sister in-law's existence was inconsequential to my visit. It becomes a problem only if the immigration guys laid serious emphasis on the question but the man still insisted he knew no one.

Just like I said, there is more to this story than your friend narrated. The immigration guys wouldn't just deport people for such a flimsy reason.

During the visa application, they normally ask if you know any body in the UK, if you reply yes, you will be required to fill some information about the person in the UK which you might not have. And beside you have no intention of even seeing that person or contacting the person when you travel.

So for convenient sake, some people fill they dont know any body in the UK.

So i believe the guy filled that in his visa application and and i trying to stand by that which unfortunately backfired. It can happen to anyone.

If you give the information about someone you know without having any knowledge of the person's status in the UK or if the person has any criminal record that can affect you.

Its really dicey you know.

... Sorry about ur friends issue... but the Immigration officers have every right to check ur laptop, phones or any gadget u have on u... its within their rights and national security issues... They check their own British citizens as well...

Your friend was asked a simple question which he should have answered truthfully and reply... Yes I know someone, a family member but I am not staying with her on this trip.
Simple! I have a relative here but I'm on a business trip n will lodge in a hotel. They'll ask if u know where u r going 2 assist u if need be. Why lie?!

You should stuck up your "holier than thou attitude". You're even wishing him a lengthy ban? That's very inconsiderate! Everyone lies, especially in this case where he doesn't want anything do with his inlaw!

My friend hold it there! Must you label everybody as a liar? If lieing is your hobby, that doesn't mean everybody lies like you, so never ever in your life again make that statement "Everyone lies"!

I have been in several situations where i risked losing my job if i said things exactly the way i messed up, and all i had to do was just say a little lie to get out of the trouble, but on those occasions, i said the truth and i still did not even lose the job cos my boss now knows it's better having an imperfect but sincere staff who is willing to improve rather than a liar.

There are many people like me who take Christianity serious, and we will rather be messed up while speaking the truth than lie just to have material gains.

Funny enough, it is people who stand for integrity against all odds that end up gaining on the long run. You think you are smart by lieing, but in reality you are just a coward who can't stand up to the truth!

I concur.

"Yes I have a Sister In Law here but this is strictly a business trip and I may not get a chance to see her. Done."

But no, village man will try to form smart with a trained border agent.
