APART from the initial N200 billion released in 2013, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) disclosed yesterday that the Federal Government has not released the N1.3 trillion NEEDS intervention fund it promised the union.

National Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, and Chairman, University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, said that government failed to release any fund in ‎2014 just as the first quarter of 2015 has ended without anything.

Speaking at the UI 63rd Interdisciplinary Discourse, ASUU‎ noted that the reasons for the union’s 21-day strike have remained, while government has failed to honour the agreement it freely signed with the union.

According to Fagge, universities are microcosms of the Nigerian society, and government policies have ensured that the university system can only produce poor leaders, who lack empathy and are disconnected from current realities due to the irrelevant curriculum.

While the Federal Government continues to cripple the operation of public universities through under funding,‎ he observed, the effects of such deliberate action is the attendant unemployable graduates, who are “lacking in basic social, emotional and literacy skills.”

Speaking on the topic, “ASUU Struggles and the Revitalisation of Public University Education in Nigeria,” Fagge, who was represented by ASUU’s vice chairman, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the condition fuelling the union’s strikes included‎ poor funding, inadequate remuneration, inadequate capacity, brain drain, poor infrastructure, violation of university autonomy and academic freedom.

The others, he noted, include failure of government to implement recommendations of its own review panels, violation of agreements it freely enters into, inconsistent policies and poor planning, corruption and poor management of funds by university administrators.

Rather than funding public education, he lamented, the Federal Government is preaching internal generation of funds by universities, a condition that now “drives the numerous awards given by universities at convocations, lecture for hire practice by departments who provide intellectual laundry for politicians to present lectures for donations, and unending distinguished personality lectures by individuals who ought to be in jail.”

Therefore, “its failure to implement its own reports as well as the repetitive nature of the grounds for strike corroborate the view that the crisis in the university is a systematic if not a carefully designed agenda to paralyse public university education in order to make way for a market-based privatisation of university education.

UI’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who disclosed that the institution has benefited so much from ASUU struggles, urged the union to keep university administrators on their toes and monitor their operations.

Whats the advantage of opening new universities when the existing ones are inadequately funded biko?

Well...in the end who am I to say anything? People will still use their fingers to go and vote for continuity of failure and pain.

They will vote for continuity in foolishness and depletion of our resources.

Continuity in the earning of foreign exchange that doesnt make the Naira appreciate as is supposed to because PDP steals the money and shares to a select few thereby squeezing what the economy needs to grow.

They will vote for continuity in increased production of agricultural products which are exported to foreign lands while food prices continue to rise here at home.

They will vote for continuity in the senseless and unreasonable issuance of licenses for private universities to even those ones that start off in a tiny shop at Ojuelegba.

They will vote for continuity of this inept government because PDP will share small bags of rice at the polling units on election days.

They will vote for continuity of the sale of crude oil and importation of petroleum products even when they know subsidy will still be removed later on. Instead of fixing our refineries.

After all said and done, they will complain about Nigeria when the time they had opportunity to vote for change and better leadership they turned their backs to it.

OAU use to be among the best in Africa before but it is ranked 23th at the moment with country like Tanzania and kenya having a university in top 15.


OAU when Awolowo built it was the most beautiful campus in africa. It even in the anthem of the school. Today, OAU lives by its previous glory.


Check out some universities in africa like University of Capetown, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, University of Cairo, etc and be amazed.


How many international student do we have in the country at the moment, our student now goes to study in Kenya, Togo, Ghana, Liberia, etc because of the standard of our education.



It's only in Nigeria we have a 500 capacity hall hold a lecture for 2000 students. Then you see student taking lectures on windows.


Our Mr. President is that gullible to the extent of given scholarships to student and sending them abroad to study in World class universities in europe and america while nigerian university suffers setback.


Honestly, Government offering scholarship to brilliant and outstanding student is one of the best step any government could take but not to oversees, not to the developed world.


US or British government will never give its student scholarship to study in OAU or UI, not even Ghanian government will ever bring their student to Nigeria. It shows cluelessness in our country.


If You and I are opportuned to get one of this scholarship, no doubt we won't return to Nigeria but rather secure a base overthere. Also, majority of those who got the scholarship from GEJ are planning to finish their studies and get a base overthere thereby we are loosing more intellectuals to foreign countries.


The total worth of Cambridge University is $7 billion dollars. We 've heard of several billions of dollars stolen and missing in this country. Those fun could get us 2 of cambridge university in Nigeria.


Without doubt, our education system is at its peril. Student spend 6 to 7 years for a 4 year course in Nigeria and after that, they won't get quality job to live like an educated elite.


Its better you wake up before it is too late. Nigeria is our country and we have no where to go if it collapse.
