Remember 52% of American citizens do not have passports and have never travelled outside their own states. Their geographical knowledge (even among otherwise educated people) is poor. Even in the UK I have on (thankfully rare) occasions when mentioning to people that I travel to Nigeria been asked "Oh, is that in Africa"!
