Who were the people that kicked against it?
The core north and some Yorubas
They are the two groups that want a continual pillage of the Niger delta till eternity
The core north I can understand, they are used to hand outs but I cannot understand why Yorubas are scared of allowing people use the resources in their land to develop their regions
You and me both pal. You and me both. Its really sad how people allow tribalism get the better of them. Religious bigotry crept in & for those who couldnt fall under that broom tribalism was their nudge. In their minds the vp is their brother which of course was the game plan. Case in point remember Tunde Bakare and the letter of retirement even before the election? They say people perish for lack of knowledge. What happens to them when the knowledge is rubbed in their faces and they still don't learn?

argon500:
Change. It was the word printed on Nigerian billboards, shouted at rallies and uttered in greeting among supporters of Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress party. Nigeria’s election may have ended with a winner and a loser, but it was more about the process than the candidates. And there, great gains were made. For the first time in the country’s short electoral history, an incumbent lost. By holding a politician accountable, Nigerians have made it more likely that their leaders will be responsive in the future. President-elect General Muhammadu Buhari can build on this progress by appointing a cabinet that reflects Nigeria’s ethnic diversity, making good on his reputation as an anti-corruption crusader, and providing quick signals about economic policy to shore up his credibility with investors.

Now comes the hard part: making good on promises he made on the campaign trail.

The president-elect's slogan was a powerful rhetorical tool, a striking alternative to Jonathan’s appeal to continue his “transformation agenda,” political commentator Chris Ngwodo said.

"There was no doubt about the argument for change, in terms of juxtaposing the incumbent president with the president-elect," Ngwodo said. "… Buhari certainly represented a departure from him" in style, substance "and in temperament as well."

Cabinet appointing

The parties that merged to form APC are the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change. Buhari has been head of state before, as a military dictator from December 1983 to August 1985. He won praise then for appointing a cabinet of technocrats, but that was a different time. Under the current constitution, Buhari must appoint a minister from each of the 36 states, and there are plenty of state governors and party lieutenants that he will need to reward for their loyalty and campaign efforts.

Time to follow through

Now he has to deliver. Buhari’s promises include an end to the Boko Haram insurgency, which has ravaged the country’s northeast in its quest to impose strict Islamic law. He also campaigned on cutting down corruption and implementing universal healthcare.

But when he takes office in May, Buhari will inherit a government that is borrowing to pay its bills and still has not passed a 2015 budget. Chuba Ezekwesili, a research analyst at the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, said promises of spending on social programs, such as universal health care, may end up on the back burner.

Ezekwesili said most of Nigeria’s budget goes toward "recurrent expenditure," covering salaries and expenses but not capital costs. "If we’re already at the point where we’re borrowing money from the World Bank to pay for the 2015 salary," he added, "then it shows that we are in a dire situation."

Boko Haram a priority

Much of Buhari’s campaign centered on snuffing out Boko Haram, but the militant group is perhaps at its lowest point in years. Over the past few weeks, the Nigerian military, with help from foreign mercenaries and troops from neighboring countries, has chased the militants out of almost all of the towns they overran in the northeast.

Dawn Dimowo, a Nigeria-based analyst for the Africa Practice consultancy, said it will be up to Buhari to figure out how to put the group down for good.

She said it might mean creating something like the Niger Delta Development Commission, a federal program with a stated goal of regional growth "that is economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative and politically peaceful," as its website says.

Any proposal will have to tackle the social and economic problems fueling the insurgency, Dimowo said. It must “address specific issues in that part of the country … [and] the hostile environment that would allow that kind of radical ideology to foster and develop to the point that this group to be able to take over a part of the country.”

But because cash is short, Dimowo said, tackling those problems may have to wait.

Economic policy

In economic policy, one area in which the Jonathan administration made progress was the privatization of the state’s electricity sector. Power plants and local utility companies have been sold off, but state commitment to regulatory reforms and to facilitating sufficient supply of natural gas to power plants is needed to spur investment. The electricity shortage is one of the country’s chief problems, and Jonathan might have kept his job had the reform process gone faster.

NNPC missing funds

Buhari was known in his military-dictator years for fighting corruption, and in a region that has some experience with that problem, Jonathan’s administration was widely perceived as worse than most. In 2014, former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. of illegally hoarding between $10 billion and $50 billion that should have been sent to the national treasury. That led to an independent audit of the state oil company, but few details of it were ever shared with the public. Buhari will face pressure to share the results as soon as possible and to force change within the company.

I know, unless something serious is done in agitation and uproar. The current system is backward and gives enough room for waste and corruption.

Nobody can wipe out corruption in a single term. While Jonathan may not have fought corruption brazenly, there were indications or at least claims that his government was fighting corruption covertly by blocking all the loopholes by which people get their sticky fingers on our treasury. Whether that's true or not, we may never know to what extent he tried. They cited the fertilizer program.

On the other hand, if we are to go by buhari's activities in his first coming, I will call him a hypocrite and with good reasons. He did these things:
1) Committed a treasonable offence by staging a coup against the very govt he was paid to protect. Remember that those who failed like Dimka, Bissala and Orkah were executed for the same offence.
2) Buhari was very partial in carrying out his anti-corruption agenda. He jailed the VP, Ekwueme and allowed Shagari the President to walk. A lot of Southern politicians and officials were jailed while most northern ones were let off the hook. Why did he jail Ojukwu in 1984? For what crime? Don't forget that Ojukwu was granted a presidential pardon by Shagari and was no longer a fugitive.
3) Buhari proscribed every form of unionism and activism and jailed most activist. I know we can claim that that is the norm in a dictatorship but that also should count for something in a sane clime.
4) GMB jailed journalists and gagged the press. He judged Nigerians harshly and treated them like animals. Even such great men like the Great Awo were jailed by Buhari for no reason.
5) Please, tell me why Buhari cancelled the Lagos Metro Line and opted to pay a fine that those in the know claimed was enough to complete the project? So much for transparency and love of country.
6) As PTF chairman, it was an open secret that Buhari used a company(APC), owned by his brother-in-law as a sole consultant. APC generated contracts, awarded and executed same, supervised and paid itself. All of these happened under the nose of this very anti-corruption guru. In a sane society, that would amount to conflict of interests. It could be punishable upto a jail term.
7) GMB claimed that Abacha didn't loot our treasury and was a great leader. We all know how many billions of dollars the country has recovered from Abacha's loot. Where is his sense of honesty and judgement?
cool After every failed attempt, our hero always caused trouble, one way or another. We all witnessed the massacre of over 1000 innocent Nigerians in 2011 after GMB lost to Jonathan. He watched while Nigeria burned.

Please, I don't wanna go into all his utterances that amounted to incitement of his followers. If we were to itemize them, they would be inexhaustible.

Today, GMB is bathing in the euphoria of his election victory simply because someone else sacrificed his pride and ambitions to see that Nigerians get a free and fair election. Someone conceded to him, in good spirit and good faith. Someone chose the path of honour. Would GMB have done so if the tables were turned? I very much doubt that.

All the same, we must all, as a matter of necessity, rally round GMB and make sure he succeeds. We owe that to ourselves and not to GMB. I doubt if he deserves our candid support on his own merit. I guess he is simply a child of necessity.

As for Jonathan, by now he would have learnt a great lesson in life. Never trust your allies completely. He was/is the architect of his own failure. Unfortunately, he isn't gonna get a second chance to make things right. The signs were there, that his northern allies were working against him or at least not working for him. Whichever!

If Jona had done a good job with Boko Haram, despite the attitude of the northern elites, I am sure he would have excelled. If he had listened to the masses and sacked some of the people that the masses were crying out against, maybe he would have stood a chance.

In all honesty, from every indication, the north wanted power back. It didn't matter to them whether it is APC or PDP, as long as it is a northerner. So if that's the case, Jona could have only won by controlling the elections. He didn't, so he didn't.

No single individual is capable of changing Nigeria.

We all must join hands to change Nigeria and the trigger can only be structural changes. One clear option is implementation of true federalism in this country to promote ingenuity in value creation and healthy competition across the regions.

Until then, am still laughing at the change agents and ignorant Nigerians.

[quote author=poseidon12 post=32375325]Exactly. Anything short of a true federal system for Nigeria would be a waste of time. They need to, as a matter of urgency, implement the recommendations of the national conference.
If Buhari makes that happen, then he would set this country on the path of real progress and unity. It would then become easier to tackle corruption.

Thanks. There are a lot of us who have been doing things differently. What we need is a President who would lead and encourage us, it would then become easy for us to follow. He would not to be the one to do the change, what he need is to diplomatically change the orientation, lead by example and surround himself with people who believe in the change.
