Hi ladies and gents!

It's been a while since I visited the Travel section. A belated Happy Easter to all.

I have a 16-year-old cousin back in Nigeria, who I am looking to invite to the UK. Her dad is deceased, so her only immediate family is her younger sister and her mother, who incidentally is not finding things easy, financially or emotionally.

She wants to come to the UK, and I am prepared to support her application, passport and visa fees. I have spoken with my aunt in great length, and she admitted it would be a great weight off her shoulders, leaving her with just one younger child to cater for.

Now I am not sure how it all works. Do I invite my cousin over:

Initially as a visitor, on a tourist visa.
As a dependant.
As a student (meaning I would have to get her into college here, not sure of the logistics though)

She would definitely need to carry on with her studies though, if her stay is to be lengthy.

I have a good, stable job, so I'm not dependent upon the State. I earn good money, have the space too. I am married with 3 children, and my wife is also in support of me filing for my cousin. I would really appreciate some pointers from the more experienced in cases such as this, either professionally, or from personal experience. Ask me about automobile-related issues, and I can recite chapter and verse, even in my sleep. wink

But in terms of immigration issues, I'm a green horn.

The easiest way for her is to enter as a student. However, what school is/has she attending/completed?

If you can sort out her school first then bring her in, its better assuming she wishes to start a University or if she's in a University, then she can get a transfer (I don't know hoW its done sha).

Yes she has to.....with her qualifications from Nigerian school, if she is accepted then she will need a consent letter from her mum because she will be applying as a child. You will be acting as her guardian in the UK with proof of fees and maintenance money for her

justwise is spot on.
If she has her ssce,getting her a univ admission ia your best bet.if she is serious a lady of 16 should be through with secondary,i finished secondary school @ 14...or if she is already in univ/poly. She should get her transcript...evalaute(usa) dunno abt the uk...then apply for admission.

This is an old thread, but you could possibly adopt her legally in Nigeria. She may then be eligible to be registered as a British citizen.

If she has family members in Nigeria this may raise suspicions as to the reason for your desire to adopt her. you will only have a case if she doesn't have family members or if you can give a good reason for adopting her. I think you have a chance if the mother is a poor widow, they are likely to understand. You should also think of doing the adoption legally as the adoption papers will be needed for authentication purposes.
