so many people, tribe and region and political party are laying claim to lagos. the resent outburst of oba of lagos in the latest video claiming and cursing any one who go against his prefered candidate... the igbo who also claim lagos by saying its no mans land.. the apc party who is the ruling political party in the state. or the yoruba group of people also claiming the ever peaceful land called lagos. to my opinion i think if a baloon is over blew it will definitely burst. i fink its high time we define the lagos by allowing all aclaimed owner of the land to flirt their muscles even if it will lead to decimating the population and progress achieved so far. so that at the end of the day the real owners will emerge.... |

Lagos is peculiar to most other states of the Federation. It is one of the only few states whose name is coined from a foreign word. Lagos is Portugues word for Lagoons. The earliest settlers of Lagos Island of which d state got its name were the freed slaves from Brazil. Lagos became the seat of Power even before the amalgamation. The freed slaves and d British colonial masters started d dévelopement we see in Lagos today. Post indepence Nigeria had Lagos as its capital. Ibadan was d capital of the Awolowo controlled Western Region while Lagos was the Federal Capital. Lagos was not under the Western Region jst like Abuja is nt under Niger, Kaduna or any state in the North. I repeat, Lagos was never under the Western Region or under Awolowo's control. However, that does nt mean Lagos is not owned by the Yorubas. YORUBAS OWN LAGOS BUT YORUBAS DID NOT DEVELOP LAGOS. Yes, Yorubas developed Ibadan which still carries the symbol of Yoruba civilization to date. On the issue of development of Lagos, the freed slaves from Brazil brought with them there Brazilian architecture which can b found in several streets in Lagos Island. The CMS cathedral is an example. The British colonial masters later established a structural frame work for development to take place in Lagos. At independence Lagos remained d federal capital as several infrastructures, investments and businesses sprang up due to its relevance as a seat of power. Populatios started springing up in several areas and housing needs arose and d federal government started several housing estates like the 1004 flats, Bar beach towers, Eric More Towers etc. The locals (Original Lagos settlers) started selling their landed properties to Nigerians from other parts of the country mostly Ogun, Kwara and Igbos who built several residential houses to meet the ever rising population of Lagos. The Federal capital was moved to Abuja in 1991 leaving development of Lagos to its citizens and foreign investors. Successive govts in Lagos inherited the already built infrastructures put in place by the Federal govt. No doubt Yorubas own Lagos but development of Lagos was mainly not by the Yorubas. Ibadan is the product of Yoruba civilization and development. |
