Hello good day please i have a question to ask, my friend just applied for a student summer work application in the u.s which enables her to work for the summer period only. So she wants to know how many hours can she work and what is the pay per hour, also this is someone that badly needs the money so laziness isn't a factor here thanks |
| Re: Hours Of Works by worry357: 2:13pm On Apr 05, 2015 |
pwettyolly:Your question is rather confused. Is she already studying at an American school? Summer working regulations only apply to resident students, it's not some kind of visa. What pay she gets depends on what kind of job she can find, could be anything or very little. SHE must find the job first, there is no magic door into employment, and dozens waiting for every job, more for summer jobs when most students want something! |
| Re: Hours Of Works by pwettyolly(op): 4:12pm On Apr 05, 2015 |
worry357:No she schools in turkey but there is a program called work and travel which enables student to travel to the United state to work during summer and you are given a visa valid for 6 months You get to find a registered agent in turkey and the agent will get your job and accommodation for you that will enable the embassy give you the visa But what she want to know right now is that is it possible to work for as long as 18 hours in diff organisation's that maybe two jobs and 8 hours in each |
| Re: Hours Of Works by worry357: 4:31pm On Apr 05, 2015 |
pwettyolly:I have never heard of this and then you mention I say that this is a scam and that a I have NEVER herd of a (legal) backdoor scheme to gain even a tempory working visa into the USA. The only working visa requires very highly skilled job position like medical doctor. Shine your eyes very well, or be ready to cry when you loose money! |

worry357:She's right...its called j-1 visa and its a program set by U.S government for students, though I don't think the program is applicable for Nigeria student schooling in Nigeria.....at poster you can read more on here. www.j1visa.state.gov |

The US is hard to find 1 job that works a person for 18 hours.. 8 hours is the maximum for full time per day... People can work 12 to 16 hour days, but not every day and any hours above 8 hours will be paid as overtime which is at least 1.5 times the hourly wage... So most job prefer to bring in a fresh worker after 8 hours... Also Employers dont like to even work their employees for 8 hours because it then invokes the law that requires the employer pays benefits such as medical and or retirement... So employers only allow permanent career workers to work 8 hours or more per day.. If you are there only for 6 months, it will be hard to find an employer that will let you work for more than 6 hours per day.. What people do is work 2 or 3 jobs.. They will work 4 hours at one job and then 4 hours at the next... Some even do 6 hours at one and 6 hours at the next... So plan on not being able to work as many hours as you like, many born citizens here in USa cannot even find that.. Also the J1/J2 visas may require you be invited to work by an employer, if you are not invited to work for more than one employer, you may not be able to wander to find more jobs... But.... The truth is that if you have any kind of visa that permits you to work in the US, it is possible to go a find other jobs on the side... Why?? Because many people who have no visa or are expired stayers, they work every day somewhere... If they can do it for decades with no papers, you can do it for 6 months with papers... If you are not finding the amount of work you need and not easily finding second and third jobs, just know to inquire about day labor offices in the area.. Go there on your free days and just work for the day.. You will make at least $50 in an easy day or even $100 on a busy long day.. The job they approve the visa for, may have a different pay scale, just remember the minimum wage in USA is $8 per hour in the lowest cost states and $15 per hour in the most expensive.. You may be easily paid more than the minimum if you have a skilled job that requires education beyond secondary school.. If you have a University degree complete already, if they accept it from Nigeria, then you can easily get double the minimum wage in many places.. It depends on what job you accept.. Most degrees from Nigeria are not accpeted in USA without added shcooling done in USA. Remember in the USA, bricklayer and house maids are not the lowest paid jobs like it is in Naija, these people make above minimum wage when they work for good companies... If you work at fast food or shopping markets,or other small businesses, then you will most likely find Minimum wage unless you work in Managerial positions... Its possible to meet your goals, but you must be careful not to be seen to violate your visa terms, also it will take effort to search the multiple jobs that dont have schedules that conflict with each other.. Many people quit jobs and find new ones again and again because of conflicting hours between seperate workplaces... What happens if 3 workplaces all agree to employ you, but they all want you to work at the same time of day? You cannot be at 3 places during one time... So you must search again and again until you find the right ones... Maybe you will have luck finding work where many lazy americans dont care and disappoint their bosses... I know some USA employers that prefer to employ workers who came on visa from poorer countries..USA farmers love to hire those kind of workers...They always work hard and do not complain and are happy because even the minimum wage is big money to them.. |

@OP...there is no need for agent. If she gets the visa.... then she should arrange employment even before travelling. Not impossible.... but jobs period...minimum wage or not are very hard to get in the US even for citizens/permanent residents. American students get unto the workforce from age 16 doing part time jobs while still schooling so she would be competing with them as well . It would not be easy to find a single job let alone two or three. She should start networking as soon as she has her papers ready and here is a good place to start. Otherwise....she can be there for months and get nothing. National minimum wage there is $7.25 per hour and there would be some deductions. Minumum wage varies from to state....but not below $7.25. The highest I think is in California...$9.50 per hour and Washington DC....no state pays $10 . If she manages to work in a restaurant as a waitress...oh well.... that $7.25 minimum doesn't apply...it becomes like $4.50 per hour plus whatever tips. But first...she must get over the first hurdle...getting the visa. |

Originalsly:Hawaii just passed a bill last year for $10 minimum wage.. Hawaii is an expensive state... I cant recall which state passed a bill for $15 minimum wage, but that is gaining momentum among people around the country... |
| Re: Hours Of Works by Originalsly: 2:25am On Apr 09, 2015 |
@19naia.... Hawaii is presently $7.75 per hour. |
| Re: Hours Of Works by 19naia(m): 4:33am On Apr 09, 2015 |
Originalsly:Thats been my home state since 2001 and i clearly remember last year the announcement that Govenor Abercrombie signed the minimum wage increase into law.. It was set at $10 an hour and it may be set to take effect in delayed fashion... Did it get repealed without my knowing? "Hawaii raised the minimum wage from the Federal minimum of $7.25 to $7.75 per hour in January 2015. The minimum wage is scheduled to be raised to $8.50 per hour on January 1, 2016, $9.25 on January 1, 2017, and $10.10 on January 1, 2018. Any employee earning a guaranteed monthly compensation of $2,000 or more is exempt from the state minimum wage and overtime law. Tipped employees can be paid an hourly rate of $0.25 less then Hawaii's minimum wage. Hawaii state labor law excludes from coverage any employee that is subject to the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act unless the state wage rate is higher than the Federal Minimum Wage. Hawaii employers may not pay you under $7.75 per hour unless you or your occupation are specifically exempt from the minimum wage under state or federal law." |

19naia:Wow thanks a lot for this post it really eye opening and I really do appreciate you taking your time to explain this for me Actually the plan is to work in 3 or four places with different hours but now there is need to put in mind how easy it is to get a job, thanks I really do hope that when it time there will be availability of jobs |
| Re: Hours Of Works by pwettyolly(op): 10:44am On Apr 09, 2015 |
Originalsly:Thanks initially she thought the minimum wage was $8- $9 so calculation was done based on that but with this she would be able to know what to expect As regard the visa it the embassy that suggested the agent but is there a way it can be done without the needs of agent |
| Re: Hours Of Works by worry357: 11:34am On Apr 09, 2015 |
pwettyolly:You know I really think that you must take off your dark glasses and take a look at REAL LIFE You are proposing that someone will walk into a country that has millions of unemployed people, and folk living on the street begging for food. But she is going to walk into three or four jobs where the hours at each on fall into place perfectly. Also the visa is intendded for people to experience life, and culture, not work all day. I think that you have more chance of winning on the lottery numbers than all your ideas lining up! |
| Re: Hours Of Works by Originalsly: 3:56pm On Apr 09, 2015 |
pwettyolly:. Agent is not a must...the embassy suggested an agent....but I'm sure she can do whatever needs to be done by herself if she is willing to do the footwork and is capable of filling the necessary forms. |

pwettyolly:19naia is on point. from my findings. People that made more money worked shorter hours in different places. The bulk of their money came from personal business (taking order from people who wants to shop in the US with commission etc) |

lillaowow:Lols thanks for helping me clear that part cause honestly I didn't know how to explain it to him Seriously I don't know why student in Nigeria a not allowed but on the other hand I think we both know why take for instance in my school some Nigerians that get the visa don't come back they rather forfeit the no of years they have studied and Start all over in the usa , so you now imagine if it were to take place in Nigeria |

Hello, Please I need help. I applied for a US visa in China in 2019 to attend a conference during my PhD study and was denied. Now, I have a postdoc offer in the USA which requires a J1 visa. The challenge I have now is that once I logged into my account to book visa appointment, its taking me back to China USA visa application portal, such that When I get to the stage of selecting visa appointment location, I was seeing locations in China (Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou etc) instead of Lagos and Nigeria. Please your advise and guidance will be highly appreciated so I can successfully book my appointment in Lagos. Thank you. |
