I hereby call on all the Governors of the SE to ensure that we build a seaport at Obuaku. I also call on all the SS Governors to ensure that Ibaka seaport in Aka Ibom is completed without further delay.

Different governors in different parties. It might be hard for all the governors to rally round and build a sea port for the SE especially now they belong to different parties and are opposition to federal government. If abia state were apc state i think it would be done. The only hope is to return omo Rochas to Douglas house and influence him to influence buhari to award the contract.

People saybit b is 30 mins drive from ibaka seaport at akwa ibom but it does not matter. Should incase nigeria bids integrates and ss don't join se the abia seaport must be established. Moreover many advanced countries have seaports close to eachother.

indeed. Especially after all Akpabio has done to buhari. However akwa ibom is rich enough to buI ld a seaport. Very rich enough. Only that it will require the federal government to license it for seaport is in the hands of federal government. Licensing no be problem. That can be done through se and ss pressure. Building but us the issue. Akwa ibom cab build ibaka. Entire se can build another one at obuaku. But the federal govt will want to license only one.

It is in the interest of the country to allow development spread. Lagos has to be de-congested and the only way to achieve that is to ensure that other parts of the country are properly developed then you will see people willing leave Lagos in droves.

The project has stagnated under PDP don't bother to blame APC for the project that has been abandoned due to technical reasons and some disagreement between FG and the concessionaire.

I actually searched google and the major reason adduced for their unviability is the lack of industries in the SE and SS to service them. They are very rarely used almost 90% of goods come into Nigeria through Lagos ports.

How can Larger cargo ships start coming there if you people dont use them? You want more ports yet the ones that you have are rarely used. The reason the Lagos port is being mostly used is because of the proximity to industries.

So if you want the ports in SE and SS to be viable you will have to site industries there first and then start using them.

For your information more ports are on their way in Lekki, Badagry, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom, sorry to disappoint you none is in the east because the Onitsha river port commisioned by Shagari was never viable from day one infact it was abandoned almost immediately. GEJ promised to resuscitate but i guess he abandoned it for the more politically expedient 2nd river Niger bridge.

Why is it that clearing goods at onne port is twice the price of tincan/apapa port.Lagos port has too much incentives from FG these are the only reasons am still in Lagos tbh.
Re: We Need Seaports In The SE/SS by kettykin: 11:40am On Apr 13, 2015
A deep sea port in the any part of the East would be the game changer. It would spiral an unexpected and spontaneous development that will not equalled even by the Asian tigers.

This will be very helpful for Nigeria and Africa except those who hate to see Nigeria developed that would oppose it.

Like i said earlier....the location of Lagos, particularly its proximity to industries is the key. However if your business is in the east and you clear your goods at Onne even if it is at twice the price i think it can still be profitable since you will be spending less on transport compared with goods cleared at Lagos ports then transported to the east.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MAJOR WHY I CALL GEJ A FAILURE..

THE SS/SE HAD A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO ACHIEVE THIS UNDER GEJ RULE.. HE COULD HAVE SIMPLY AWARDED A CONTRACT FOR THE DREDGING OF WARRI AND CALABAR PORTS. TO MAKE THEM MORE FUNCTIONAL EVEN THE LAGOS PORT IS NOT SO FUNCTIONAL BECOS OF ITS SHALLOW WATERS .. ONCE THE WATERS ARE DEEP ENOUGH FOR VESSELS TO BERTH ALL OTHER THINGS THE REST WILL FALL INTO PLACE .. BUT BECOS OF HIS MYOPIC REASONING WE LOST THIS CHANCE ..

ANY DEVLOPING ECONOMY KNOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF ENSURING THAT IT HAS MULTIPLE FUNCTIONAL PORTS.

DO YOU THINK THAT ANY RIGHT THINKING NORTHERNER WOULD ALLOW THE DREDGING OF WARRI ONITHSA AND CALABAR PORTS KNOWING THAT IT WILL MAKE THE REGION ECONOMICALLY INDEPENDENT ...

IMAJINE WHAT A FUNCTIONAL CALABAR PORT WILL DO TO THE FREE TRADE DREAM OF DONALD DUKE FOR TINAPA...NIGERIA IS ONE BECOS OF THIS CRAZY IDEA OF SYMBOLISM THAT WE ALL NEED EACH OTHER.. ONCE THE SS/SE BECOME SELF SUFFICIENT WITH ITS OWN PORT THEN THE GAME CHANGES...

GEJ MESSED UP ALL HE DID WAS AWARD PIPELINE PROTECTION CONTRACTS TO CRIMINALS .. NOW ALL WE CAN DO IS CRY FOUL...

Cost of transporting a trailer load(1 container) to lagos is about 250k where as to clear the same consignment is twice in price in onne,we talking a difference of over a million naira.pls say what you know abeg.
I'll be saving millions if I clear in Lagos and still sell my wares here.

On the contrary, its been PDP stalling such a laudable project. There is a port also in Sapele. If the ports in those regions are opened and politics is not played with it, then the whole nation will benefit.

I thought akpabio was building the ibaka seaport himself? If it was truly a FG project then I know for sure APC will stop it in its tracks in order to make sure Lagos has the only functional seaport in that country. Smh. I had hopes for ibaka seaport

Jonathan wasted 6 years without building a port in Bayelsa or dredging the already ecisting ones in Calabar and Port Harcourt. It may interest us to know that all the ports in the South-south were built by Northern leaders. So is it for all the federal roafs, refineries, fertilizer company, aluminium company Ikot-Abasi and petrochemicals Eleme. Jonathan stayed there 6 years and added nothing.

at the bolded statement.....there is no political restraints stopping the ss/se from been economically independent ( they are economically independent) there are THREE PORTS IN THAT REGION (WARRI,PORT HARCOURT ,ONNE )...BUT WHAT SIGNIFICANT INDUSTRY APART FROM OIL AND GAS EXIST IN THOSE REGION?....I THINK THE MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT SE/SS KEEP ELECTING IDIOTS INTO POWER

this guy is telling the bitter truth.
the cost of transporting a 20" container for example from Lagos to Onitsha is #160000 while the same container goes for #90000 from Onne to Onitsha.
For 20" Container Tailoring Materials
LAGOS PORT (TINCAN OR APAPA)
Clearing cost Transportation cost
#750000 #160000
ONNE PORT
Clearing Cost Transportation cost
#800000 #90000
note assume the destination of the container is Onitsha.
it will take 5 hours for container truck from onne to onitsha and 18 hours from lagos to onitsha.
consider the risks involve from lagos to onitsha.

Which port is oil being lifted from? Is it the same Lagos again.

Why can't you be using the same port for your importation? Will it not reduce your cost?

The truth is most goods coming through Lagos, maybe because of the port, but definitely due to the higher percentage of middle income class in SW.

For every rich person you see in SW, you will see 7 middle income.class and 2 poor people.

The middle income class is the driver of any economy all over the world.

There must be a reason why obuaku, ibaka, calabar, onne and warri are not attractive. What stalled GEJ from assisting to.fix the problem in 6years?

I don't think we should be clamouring for "new seaports". What we really need is for the constitution to be amended to remove port construction and management from the exclusive list and placed in the concurrent list. That way our states can build and maintain the ports themselves.

This whole pleading with an all-powerful federal government to get the slightest thing done is what we need to do away with.
