In today's world of overly saturated visual culture, it's an odd thing to think of a photograph--itself-- as being "rare." We are so used to instantaneous image recording, completely at our fingertips and, as is the case for most people in this generation, it's hard to imagine it any other way. But, given everything previously mentioned, the inherent rarity, novelty, individuality, and history in photos from the past make them that much more enticing and that much more valuable. Having the opportunity to visualise things we often consider our own distant pasts is a great privilege and allows us different perspectives on the present. In an attempt to do just that, take a look through this eclectic collection of rare historical photographs, bask in their rustic aesthetic, and awaken your inner history buff. 1. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on June 28, 1914, the day they were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip (insert) in Sarajevo. The event that triggered WWI.

6. "Survival Town," Nevada was a replica town created by the U.S. Army in 1955 to test the affects of atomic bomb detonations. These photos show its absolute demise.

7. WWII: Indian troops arriving in Singapore, November 1941. 8. Electrical engineer, genius, and archetypal "mad scientist" Nikola Tesla in his laboratory testing his "Magnifying Transmitter" in 1900. Only a few years before that, Westinghouse chap stole his AC glory.

This is some of the first photographic documentation of child labor in the spinning room of The Bibb Mill No. 1, Macon, Georgia, 1909. The children were between 9-12 years old. 13. Astronaut Michael Collins took this photo of the Lunar Module where Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were located while Earth looms in the background during the Apollo 11 Mission in 1969. Considering matter cannot be created or destroyed (and what you see here is what makes up our physical form), every single person on the planet--alive, deceased, still unborn--is in the frame of this photo. All except Collins, the only human outside this photograph. 14. A day at the beach for Albert Einstein in 1939. It was during this vacation in Long Island that he would write a letter to President Roosevelt urging the U.S. not to wait while Nazi Germany could potentially be making a nuclear bomb.

15. The only known photograph (left) of "Nipper," the fox terrier on the His Master's Voice label (EMI, RCA, JVC Records). In 1899, Englishman Francis Barraud painted the iconic image of his dog which was acquired by the newly formed Gramophone Company that same year. Today, the name has been sold to the entertainment/media retail chain called HMV.

16. Ernest Hemingway and Agnes von Kurowski during the First World War. His love affair with this nurse was the impetus for the novel A Farewell To Arms (1929), and Agnes was the inspiration for its heroine, Catherine Barkley. 17. The real "Rockford Peaches," one of the first signed teams in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) established in 1943 during WWII. You'll probably recall Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, and Madonna doing their thangs in the 1992 film A League Of Their Own. When Kit gets traded from the Peaches to Racine...heartbreaking.
