Life Issues Of Religion Differences by Bplati: 10:16am On Apr 18, 2015
I'm from a Muslim background and so is my hubby. We have two children. My family is liberal and allowed us to practice whatever religion that pleases us. I'd been going to church even before I met hubby who was also a church goer. Hubby's family is very strong in Islam and had threatened to disown us if we don't practice the religion. They even want to sponsor our pilgrimage to hajj but we are not interested. We started playing diplomacy by pretending to be who we are not especially when they are around or we go visiting. Right now, I'm not even going to church neither am I practicing Islam because I'm fed-up. Isn't religion about serving God? Why the superiority in religion? Can people serve whoever God they prefer?. I fear for my kids because I really want to raise them to know God. Its really affecting me psychologically and contemplating relocating with the kids.

Pls advise me.

Disown you people because you are practicing the religion of your choice as married people??some families are pathetically ignorant!!!!!!as long as you people do believe in GOD and they do not believe in the devil then i do not see any reason why any family should do such....nonsense....

Are you guys still dating or married?

The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria accords the right to every individual adults freedom of choice of religion.

I want to believe you guys are above 18 and I don't see any reason why non-violent threat from another adult should disturb you.

It is left for you and your husband/boyfriend to take a stand and stop being diplomatic about issues. It has not been resolved because they know you guys are weak in your decision. Therefore, the pressure wouldn't subside but will keep increasing.

Once you take a known stand and defy their threat to do whatever you want, they will either disown you or allow you to practice whatever you choose. There is no need of entertaining fear, the ball is in your court.

Thank you for this. We are married o.. Before they agreed with the traditional rite sef. Na wahala, hence the diplomacy. I'm extremely tired of their domineering behavior. I'll get my family back and stand on what I believe. Just scared of the Yoruba culture thingy. The family believes I'm the one that can help convince their son and he affirmatively said NO. I can only support my Hubby's decision. Worrisome.

Op please let the word DISOWN sound to you like they are going to wipe you out of the surface of earth. You are no longer bearing your maiden name and your husband is now man enough to make decisions. You both have your own families now and responsible for every actions you take.

Go ahead with whatever religion you choose too and feel very comfortable with. No one has any right whatsoever to threaten you on which religion to go by.

You don't have to do anything, just keep your stand and remain confident. Best wishes

Parental curse can only have impact if the child did something wrong... "As birds by wandering.. curse curseless shall not come."

When you are pressured, tell them their son is the head of the family and whatever he decides is what you will abide with. So they should talk to their son.

Hmmm, sometimes I wonder what's attached to this religion such that I was seriously begged to convince him and promised me that I'll get anything I want in this world. This issue no be small matter o. I'm just scared not to offend anybody else I'll look them in the face, then one will be tagged as a bad wife... One can imagine the extent they can go spiritually. I don't want any attack or whatsoever. Scared they can manipulate my hubby into marrying a Muslim of their choice.

@op

i understand your fears completely. The truth is when i read your post this afternoon, i showed it to my wife and asked if she's the one that posted it. what i am trying to say is that i am in the same shoes as you and ur hubby( my wify and i are from Islamic background but we chose to be Christian). Same way ur inlaws are begging you to convince ur hubby is the same they are begging my wife to convince me but I STOOD MY GROUND VERY WELL. She (wify) was even promised a car grin. Some things i would like to share with you regarding my experience and how we (wify and i) managed the situation. Pls PM me so that we can talk privately

Yes I've studied both and I prefer to be a christian. Fanatics tend to be hell bent on imposing their choices on people. I really wish they can be liberal

Nothing makes one religion better than the other. It all depends on your choice of religion and your belief. Serving one true GOD and doing unto others what you want done to you.

Counting on "People of NL", how cute.

So even in your matrimonial home ( independent and free of clocking in & out) , your parents still call the shots, How old are you please

Disown you, let them disown you and see who will lose in the end. Orishirishi

Every parents would be worried if they know their son/daughter is converting from thier own religion. They might be worried about the consequences, I guess this is why the persuasion and pressure . My thought is you and
your husband don't have much knowledge about Islam and you became christians but instead of them forcing you and putting so much pressure on you. It is best they just pray about it and admonish both of you. There's no compulsion in religion and they should not be forcing two adults.
Also pray about it instead of having a closed mind about Islam since you are now a christian. May God lead you to the straight path

You definitely have not study both to the best of your ability. I think you are either inclined to one more than the other or you just picked the easiest religion to practice. Haven said this only God lead the people HE wants to lead which are people that really want to be led and have opened thier heart to Him.

Are you indirectly suggesting that she revert back to Islam with her hubby?

Religion should be a thing of choice and self fulfilment. No one should choose or force another into their personal believe

@op, stick to what brings peace in your home, the happiness of your home should be your priority.

Hmmm I'm just saying this because most Muslims who initially convert do this because they don't have enough knowledge and understanding of Islam.
But i agree with you she should choose whatever works for her and her family
