Although a new government will be sworn in next month, the role of the outgoing Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in the effective management of the Nigerian economy, in a trying period like this, to the admiration of the International Monetary Fund, cannot be overlooked, reports Festus Akanbi For Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who doubles as the Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, the recently concluded World Bank/International Monetary Fund Spring Meeting in Washington DC, United States of America might be the last public outing before the President Goodluck Jonathan administration finally winds up its activities to pave way for the incoming administration of General Muhammadu Buhari on May 29. However, the symbolism of the World Bank/IMF meeting was underscored by a vote of confidence passed by the IMF on the efficient management of the ongoing oil price crisis by the outgoing administration in Nigeria. Responding to a question at the IMF/World Bank Spring meetings, a fortnight ago, the IMF Managing Director, Christine Lagarde, had commended Nigeria's strategic response to the oil price slide. According to her, as one of the seven oil-producing nations in the African region affected by the revenue loss, Nigeria's response was commendable. Seventy per cent of Nigeria's revenue is derived from the sale of crude petroleum products, and since the middle of last year, the country and other Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have suffered over 50 per cent loss revenue. The Leadership As the minister driving the economy in these trying times, Okonjo-Iweala had spearheaded the roll out of a cocktail of belt-tightening measures aimed at minimising the vulnerability arising from the attendant revenue losses from oil exports. http://nairausd..com/2015/04/appraising-okonjo-iwealas-stabilising.html

ifyan:Well, if you ask me, based on what is on ground, with threats of jobs losses and huge fall in the value of our currency with the attendant rise in the cost of doing business especially as regards imports, I don't see how her handling is worth any commendation. Besides that, if she must be commended, I think it should be viewed from the backdrop of her stewardship from day one; abysmal if one must be honest. |

To me NOI was one of the shining lights in this useless outgoing administration. She did well in keeping the economic free fall in check during the recent drop in oil prices. |

She did a pretty good job if you'd ask me. I think sometimes we overstate the duties of the minister of finance. Critical monetary aspects of the economy like inflation, interest rate and naira stability are not under her control. It is the duty of the central bank to regulate these aspects with their monetary policy. An economy can be influenced by either two ways - fiscal policy or monetary policy. Okonjo controls the fiscal side while the CBN controls the monetary side. All economic activities in Nigeria are transacted with the Naira, the CBNs mandate is to protect the value of naira and ensure that naira can be utilised to gain full employment of resources in the economy. The CBN is more instrumental to our economic development than the Ministry of finance. Ngozi's primary duty is the management of government revenues or finances and she has managed it well. |
