After weeks of consultation and character evaluation, President-elect General Muhammadu Buhari has finally short-listed 18 persons across Nigeria's six geo-political zones, who will make up his transition committee ahead of the May 29 handover date.


In a related development, President Goodluck Jonathan and Buhari met on Friday for the second time this month behind closed doors at the new Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.


Also, the National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, still struggling with the reality of the loss of his party in the Presidential election, attributed the defeat to the “political tsunami that swept across the northern part of the country which was too much for the PDP to withstand.”


Although the transition committee to be headed by Malam Ahmed Joda will be made up of three persons from each of the six geo-political zones, sources said the South-west however has more representation (four persons) indicating the weight and influence of its leader in the zone, Senator Bola Tinubu.


The sources further hinted that apart from Buhari who decided the choice of persons selected across the zones, Tinubu also had a major and significant input in the list, in addition to also exceeding the regional quota of three persons per zone.


The committee which, according to sources, will be inaugurated on Monday or sometime next week comes with terms of reference for members, chief of which is liaising with members of the committee put together by the Jonathan administration for smooth handover.


Apart from Joda, who has been selected as the chairman and Dr. Doyin Salami as Vice-chairman, the committee also has Malam Adamu Adamu as its secretary.


Other members of the committee according to an exclusive document made available to THISDAY are Mr. Boss Mustapha, Malam Muhammad Hayatuddin, Alhaji Abubakar Malami (SAN), Dr. Tam David West, Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Chief John Oyegun.


Also on the list are Mr. Festus Odimegwu, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Mrs. Nike Aboderin, Mr. Wale Edun, Mrs. Bola Adesola, Barrister Solomon Dalong, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Senator Hadi Sirika and Brig-General Lawal Jafaru Isa.


Aside liaising with government's committee, the terms of reference also includes studying and working on the handover notes preparatory to May 29.


Other terms, THISDAY learnt, include designing the blueprint that would assist the Buhari government take off smoothly with a clear understanding of the challenges at hand.


Responding to the calibre of persons likely to make up his transition committee a few weeks ago, Buhari told THISDAY in an interview: “We have started discussing about it. Personally, I will make sure that it is not too big because if it is big, they will start thinking of how to influence the choice of ministers either for themselves or those they want to be ministers.


"But my hope and my idea is to get knowledgeable and experienced technocrats that are really patriotic to study the handing over notes by ministries and make recommendations. I want them to be completely detached people who are patriotic Nigerians; who are knowledgeable and experienced.”

Ahmed Joda

Ahmed Mohammed Joda is a Nigerian administrator, journalist, politician who is a former permanent secretary in the Northern Nigerian Public Service, Federal Ministry of Information, Education and the Federal Ministry of Industries and was among a class of super perm secs in the 1970s who were mostly a cadre of group three level perm secs who played a major role during the Nigerian Civil War. In the 1960s, he worked with Ahmadu Bello in the Northern regional government.
In 1999, he headed a Committee on Assessment of Federal Government parastatals and also a panel on poverty alleviation.
Lately, he serves as the chairman of ABTI-American University of Nigeria, Yola and is the principal founder of Benue Valley Farms.

Early life and education
Joda was born in Girei located present day Adamawa State to a Koranic teacher father. Like many of his Muslim peers, he started his education at a Koranic School. He then proceeded to the Yola Elementary and Middle schools before attending Barewa College. In the 1950s, he attended Pitman College, London and gained practical experience in journalism while staying in Britain.

After completing his secondary education in 1948, he initially chose agriculture as a preferred choice of work. He applied and was admitted to Moor Plantation which was then one of the two prominent research and training centers in country. From Moor, he worked briefly at an Agricultural center in Yola before entering the field of journalism at Gaskiya Corporation, Zaria. He later worked for the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission serving as the editor of NBC Kaduna and then joined the Northern Nigeria civil service as Chief Information Officer and later permanent secretary in the regional Ministry of Information.
In 1967, he became a federal permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information and subsequently moved to Lagos. However, the country was just at the beginning of a civil war and his ministry was in charge of federal propaganda during the war and also to douse perceptions of the war being a Muslim vs Christian war. . After, the war, he was seconded to the Ministry of Education when the ministry was involved in rehabilitation of facilities in the old East Central State, launching of the Universal Primary Education and the establishment of the Nigerian Universities Commission. In the mid 1970s, he became permanent secretary in the Ministry of Industries at a time, the Nigerian government was trying to launch a national steel programme.
He has also served as chairman and board member of various bodies including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Nigerian Communications Council, Pastoral Resolve, SCOA, Nigeria, Chagouri and Chagouri Construction, Flour Mills, Nigeria, and the Nigerian LNG.

A doctoral degree graduate of Queen Mary College, University of London, Doyin is currently a full-time member of the faculty at Lagos Business School (LBS), where he is Senior Lecturer. In addition, he is also an executive director of the UK-based African Business Research Ltd.

At LBS he leads sessions in economic environment of business, and had also served as director of programmes for five years until January 2005. Dr Salami’s research interests include: issues in corporate long-term financial management; macroeconomic policy; corporate competitiveness and risk management; and characteristics of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

In addition to teaching, ‘Doyin is a consultant. His consulting activities have included assignments for the Department for International Development (DFID), World Bank, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Beyond multilateral organisations, he also works as a consultant for corporations. Presently, he is retained as a consultant by British American Tobacco (BAT), and BGL Securities Ltd. Other companies for which he has undertaken consulting assignments include Coca-Cola Nigeria and Equatorial Africa (CCNEAL), Kakawa Discount House. He has facilitated or participated in corporate retreats for, amongst others, Zain Nig Ltd., MTN, African Petroleum Plc.

He is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria and had been a member of the Federal Government’s Economic Management Team.

APC needs to school the PDP on how to play opposition. That scholarship by Lai Mohammed and APC should be extended to all PDP e-thugs as well.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has exposed former head of state, General Mohammadu Buhari’s mismanagement of Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).

ThisDay in an exclusive report said the exposure was contained in the original copy of a report by the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF) Interim Management Committee, instituted on July 7, 1999 by Obasanjo.
