As the unlikelihood of the All Progressives Congress (APC) being able to enforce a zoning formula that would ensure the equitable distribution of key posts in the incoming administration becomes more apparent, there is a major likelihood that the Northern section of the country would account for the four topmost positions in the country.

These are the presidency, which will be occupied by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), the post of Senate President, that of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN).

Should this scenario play out, the entire Southern section of the country would end up with the posts of deputies starting from the vice-presidency to the deputy speakership, which could create a problem, as it contravenes the federal character clause enshrined in the constitution.

Sources in the APC informed THISDAY that with the “Tambuwal syndrome” gathering pace in the National Assembly, the chances are very high that the legislators would jettison whatever zoning formula that may be determined by the party and decide on key leaders of their choice.

The Tambuwal syndrome arose in 2011 when members of the House of Representatives ignored the zoning formula of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had zoned the post of speakership and the deputy to the South-west and North-east geopolitical zones, respectively.

Instead, its members – Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha – respectively from the North-west and South-east, contested for the posts and emerged speaker and deputy speaker of the House with the help of their colleagues from the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) at the time.

An APC source said that as it stands, with the party unable to determine a generally acceptable zoning formula, this has provided the leeway for legislators to close ranks and back candidates of their choice.

He said that while the North-east and North-cental zones are angling for the Senate presidency, the South-west and North-east have entered the trenches in the battle for the speakership in the House.

The two main contenders for the Senate presidency are Senators Bukola Saraki from the North-central zone and Ahmed Lawan from the North-east, so should any of them emerge, the North would have clinched the post, the APC source explained.

For the speakership, the main contenders are Femi Gbajabiamila from the South-west and Yakubu Dogara from the North-east, with the latter having the clear edge over his South-west rival for the post.

The APC source said whichever way one looks at it, the North could end up holding all the four key positions in the incoming administration if care is not taken and the South, particularly the South-west which played a vital role in Buhari’s victory, playing second fiddle.

Everyone who follows my posts here knows I'm anything but "tribalistic", but these innuendoes coming from a particular section of this country is becoming too damn annoying.

How come these writers, Chuks Okocha and Onyebuchi Ezigbo, talked about the four topmost positions of authority going to the North leaving nothing to the South?? Has the position of the VP been eliminated from our constitution?? Is Osinbajo a Northerner When would these guys stop this polarising brand of doing stuffs??

Very irritating to say the least.

of course that is what they (south west) were born to do, play a second fiddle to the house-fulani, provided a few rich men like TIFNUBU benefit from government.
I de laf, the way things are going if care is not taking the west will regret their new political romance with fulanis. APC may even split before the beginning of BUHARI`S government.

As for the fool Rochas who have been shouting that PDP gave no position to IGBOS am still waiting to see what APC will give him and his co-travelers.

Pained losers!

Rochas wants to be a governor and he is now a governor, what else do you want for/from him?... Why does the success of the man keep giving you sleepless nights?

These reporters forget that currently, the North has the VP, Senate President, Speaker of Reps and Chief Justice of the Federation so what's different if the same scenario is playing out. The SW have the Vice-President and I'm sure Prof.Osibanjo will keep GMB on his toes. There are six geopolitical zones in the country and NW and SW are already settled. The remaining zones NE,NC,SE,SS are jostling for the remaining slots. So how will it amount to injustice if the NE and NC share the Nos 3&4 positions when clearly those zones have no top slot in the next dispensation.

Imagine a situation where the entire north east and north west were left out of the equation.....you really think the entire country wouldn't go up in flames? Has there ever been a time since independence when the Fulani haven't occupied the first, second or third highest office in the country? You lot think this country was created for your benefit abi (and it ain't far off from the truth if i'm to be honest undecided)!? Avarice is your middle name!

Nigeria might definitely end with something worse than was obtained in 1984.
Buhari is too senile and old to learn from his past mistakes.

Can you please name the topmost positions in Nigeria political arena?

I think they're the President, VP, Senate president, Speaker of HOR. The Chief Justice is by appointment and a career position which means it can alternate as situations demand from time to time.

As it stands now, NW has the presidency while the SW has the VP position. The Senate President is between the NE/NC while the Speaker HOR is most likely for SW or NE depending on where APC zones the senate presidency to.

The SE and SS will unfortunately have to settle for deputy positions and other not-so-important roles in the two chambers but they should be adequately represented in the administration through ministerial appointments. And this is because of the outcome of last elections which we already know.

So NE is no more North abi? But u don't care if SS and SE are in the equation

For Yorubas eh, once they're playing second fiddle to their Fulani masters, the rest of the positions can stay in the north

Just read your post again. D only south u know is SW with a very inactive VP position. D rest of the positions can go back to your masters even though they already have the most important position which is the presidency

I hope u guys see beyond your noses someday

Just read your post again

If you have any part of my post you have an issue with, just state it.

We have six geo political zones, three in the north and three in the south.

The only zones not getting a key position are SS/SE and that's because of the outcome of the election. Besides, it's not even a done deal that a SS rep cannot eventually become speaker of the HOR.

Key ministerial positions are the other realistic ways to carry SE/SS along in this dispensation. After all, politics is a game of number.

So the only south that should get any position is the SW and that's even a VP position that carries no weight? Smh

But the rest of the positions are free to go back to the north. Whether u chose to call it NE NN NC NW etc
While SE/SS should be left out.

The way Yorubas reason eh. I'm speechless

Keep praying for the failure of the Nigerian state but just be aware that all Nigerians are shareholders in the Nigerian project and we would all share in its gains and losses.
