Saw that Dubai was trending in Nigeria and checked to see why, and saw these tweets from Nigerian journalist Fidelis Mbah! So I went to dig and found more details.

The UAE Central bank this week enacted a new policy prohibiting Nigerians who do not work in their country from operating accounts in any of their local or foreign banks. They say this is to prevent money laundering by Nigerian politicians which they claim has become rampant.

Now, they have reportedly closed accounts of all Nigerians not working in the UAE and issued them cheques equivalent to the amount they have in their accounts. All account holders reportedly have 5-working days to cash their money.

Nice move. I wonder if the UK and US would do likewise. Both countries are quick to label Nigeria a corrupt country, but proceeds from corrupt countries are never repatriated.

They should send the cheques to Buhari. All account owners will then be invited to an interview session to explain the source of the funds.

UK is the worst, if money is entering no qualms but whenever you wanna ship your money out, they will accuse you of money laundery.

Nice. This is a type of action I have expected these countries where our politicians, thier children and colleagues go for wasteful holidays to have taken. Its not enough to say they are helping us recover our stolen wealth, but they should make laws to prevent them from even coming to lodge the money in thier country.
If these politicians should fortunately steal, it will even be better and understandable if the money is seen to have been reinvested here but our pain is that the stolen billions are taken where it will never be productive but wasteful thereby impoverishing Nigeria citizens the more.

grin Atiku is finished

US and Uk should do same if they really want to prevent money laundering.
let them keep the money locally and invest; instead of mopping up the choicest properties abroad with Nigerian money.
